Hard-drive based

Hard-drive based camcorders are the newest thing, and for my next camcorder, that's what I'd be interested in.

They can store hours worth of video, instead of mini DV cartridges or DVDs which can only store about 90 min of video max.

Here's a link for the new JVC Everio:

I recently bought a Sony digital8 recorder, not the latest & greatest technology, but for my needs it suits.sure, some will say its obsolete technology, but its fine for what I want to do, and the price is considerably less then DVD or HD camcorders.

Ya I noticed that recently.
I'm tempted to grab one, but Gentle Ben said, latest greatest = higher price point.
I may wait a bit as well for Canon to come out with one.
Love Nikon and Canon stuff.
Shit wonder how long before they (Canon and others) start putting HD based camcorders on the market.

One thing I wanted to add, I wondered how much these HD based camcorders would hold and looks like I got my question answered.

High quality 1½ hours, that sucks.
I hate companies for always putting out a little bit, just to feed the market and have people buy shit every year or two.
Then the companies wonder why the iPod was so successful.
They never came out with 128mb, or 256, the iPod came out in full force, wham, 5gigs, 10, 20, etc.
Then of course, everyone else followed suit, months later (and too little, too late)
Wish Apple would make a camcorder, I'd be the first one to fork over the coin and grab it.
Steve Jobs and company sure know what they're doing.

DVD camcorders are priced competatively at this time and yield a quality results. You can pick one up between $700-$800. The HD and hard drive ones are too new and expensive at the present time.

But I heard that DVD camcorders cant keep up with high speed recording (eg...a soccer game or any type of fast movement).

See here: https://terb.cc/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=100431&highlight=camcorders

Has this been fixed now??? And if so, whats the best brand ????

Esco, it is very difficult to run alongside a soccer player recording with camera in hand. I can see you are having difficulties keeping up.

Try golf instead.

I have a Sharp Mini-DV. I was told that the picture quality is the same as a DVD. Stay away from those "6 in 1" camcorders as they record on memory cards and videos are not comparable to Mini-DV or DVD.

Does anyone know if it is possible to get a good quality still print from video frame?

Cameras with 3 chips are the best, there is a guy selling a 3 chip panasonic retail $2500 US for $600.00 or $800.00 bucks CAN today in the buy and sell newspaper (buy at the convenience store). I have 2 ...3 chip cameras and the colour cannot be matched by any 1 Chip camera. Chip=CCD Charge Coupled Device i think. A new bottom of the barrel 3 chip camera costs under $1000.00 now. Forget DVD cameras and harddrive cameras if they do not have 3CCDs...unless you do not care about quality

hmm...3ccd's = lots of coin, as for the buy & sell guy, ill check it out.
Except, I don't immediately think of Panasonic when it comes to camcorders, mostly Canon and Sony(although I hate Sony as a company).

It depends on the megapixels, if it's anything less than 3, it won't be that great.
But that's not what you originally intended to buy a camcorder for right?
Use a regular camera (film -which will blow any digital camera, regardless of pixel strength, right out of the water- or a digital with 4+megapixels).
Unless there's something in a video scene that you want to still.
