The giant telecommunication firm's viz Rogers, Bell & i think so even Telus are ripping their clients since a long time by charging every month A System Access Fees of $ 6.95 (Rogers) and similiar by other two cell companies. The Govt. had allowed them for a short period of time, but they have continued charging their customers ever since, and unfortunately there is no Check & Balance Authority over here in Ontario to look into such matters, but the conusmer's are the main victims of such payments which they have to compulsorily pay every month included in their bills, which is totally illegal, as the same is not apporved as Tariff by the Provincial or even Federal Government. Roger's off-shoot company named Fido & other two cell companies like Kudoo & Virgin do not charge any such illegal monthy fees, therefore its a moral duty of giant companies like Rogers, Bell & Telus to also withdraw such dramas going on since a long time.
These day's thousands of their customer's are un-employed, and during the current recession time each and every cent should be accounted for from these multi-billion dollar Rip-off's. Its completely fair if they just charge initially while activating the cell phone, but not make a practice of charging such illegal fees every month. I was shocked to read their recent advertisement of Rogers, as regards their promotion of their Rocket USB Magic Stick, on that even they are now charging a system access fees hook or by crook, which is really very shameful and disgusting in a democratic country like Canada. Just compare the Server rates across the border where Cell Phones, their monthly plans are much much cheaper, or look at a third & under developed countries like India, Thailand, Sri-Lanka, Malaysia where cell phones are available abduntly cheaper in cost, plus their plans are nearly 1/4 cost what Rogrers, Bell & Telus are charging over here in Canada, their roaming charges are also exhobitant which makes Canada the most costliest country to maintain a cell phone for pure convenience and emergencies.
However, we should voice our concern for such financial irregularities, and our
Councillors, Provincial and Federal Members of Parliament shouild also raise their voices for such things happening over here in Canada, plus people should voice their concerns through Media, forums, and through press/TV for immediate withdrawal of such fees forcibly imposed on the shoulders of their customers.
I am writing this thread in total disgust! & hope some sense prevails on our
authorities too to look into such matters, and we are able to get this illegal payment of S.A. Fees withdrawn immediately.

Those fees have absolutely nothing to do with the CRTC. In the early days the companies certainly led people to believe it was, but it's not.

If they're illegal, stop paying them. I think you'll find the law is NOT on your side.

They can charge whatever they want, its called free-enterprise
The problem is that its not free enterprise. If it were free enterprise, any company would be allowed to enter the telecommunications industry in Canada, and bring some competition to the market. However this industry is heavily regulated, and the CRTC allows only a small oligarchy's worth of companies to transmit on Canada's airwaves. This oligarchy (Bell, Telus, Rogers, a smattering of very small companies with extremely limited access to bandwidth in Canads) colludes to keep prices high, the highest in the world, in fact. If the cellular market in Canada were run by the rules of free enterprise, our cell phone bills would be about 1/4 (maybe less) than what they are, because global companies such as T-Mobile, Vodaphone, NTT, PCCW, etc, would be free to enter the Canadian market. But they are not. Its fucking communism.

I see your point and its a good one.

But if others were allowed in I bet they also would suddenly charge an 'access fee'

You have a communist views! Buddy then why they dont allow other Cellular Companies of the world who are ready to come and put up their facilities and offer their monthly plans much much cheaper around 25% cost of what these
Rip-off's are presently charging from us. This is not a Free-Enterprise, they are
monopolozed companies, which is not at all accepted in present times and age. Just allow 2~3 companies from US & Europe all three giants of Canada would crumble & bow down in a week's time of their plans announcement, if they face real competition, that is a Free Enterprise! So better think before you write like a beaurocrat, which also violates the fundamental rights of each and every citizen of canada, if certain business/companies like Cell Phone Companies are given undue protection by the Govt. and there is no one to check their financial irregularities, & rip-off techniques, which is an open white collar crime in diguise. Open your eyes still its is not too late, that these cellular companies are charging the highest rates in the world, burdening its citizens and the Govt. is just watching and making them bigger and bigger every year. This is happening in Canada only, not in other democratic open minded countries of the world.

Between a rock and a hard place
Rogers and Fido justify the fees by ... get this ... stating it covers the costs of providing the higher levels of customer care.

This is correct. It is not free enterprise, but a monopoly.

The CRTC system is a monopoly, but the Rogers access fee isnt.
They can charge whatever they like, name it whatever they like and fuck you over whichever way they like!

Dont like it, start your own phone company

Dont get me wrong, I hate Rogers but I dont see anything illegal or monopolistic about their practices.
Your beef should be with the CRTC and the government

I think if everyone switched to koodo/fido/virgin mobile, Rogers/Bell/Telus would suffer.
Telus owns Koodo btw. And they would still penalize you for changing from Telus to Koodo, if you end your contract early. Laughable.
