Couldn't find a thread for our national men's basketball team, so I thought I'd start one. Pack your bags boys, you're going to the Olympics!!!!!!!! Great job today, very proud of how they represented our country.

P.S. if there is an existing thread the moderators can merge them.

The fact that there’s no thread and no response to this, is disappointing.

C‘mon guys. We played our hearts out. Many of these boys are from Toronto and Mississauga. I’m very proud and excited to watch them in this and watch them all do well in NBA.

(even happier watching US lost!)

I was going to post this in the Canadian Dominance thread, it deserves its own thread.

Congratulations to Canada for qualifying for the Paris Olympics. Shai came through with 12 points in the 4th quarter. I can't blame Jamal Murray for not participating, he's not even two years removed from reconstructive knee surgery. If the Nuggets didn't make the playoffs he'd be there...and he had a 280 lbs 7' galoot press him into the resistance pool.

Coach Malone must have been terrified!

It was sort of a meaningless game for the US yesterday. . They had already qualified for the quarterfinals and for the Olympics before the game. I’m sure they tried hard, but there was no real consequences to their loss.

Now that we are down to the final 8 in this tournament would be nice to see us complete the run and get to the final.

It’s a wide open tournament.

I've been watching. Yesterday's game was very exciting. Great come from behind victory and great bounce back after a disappointing game against Brazil. Lots of talent on this Canadian team. A bit smaller up front than some teams but they can go deep if they continue to execute game plans that focus on their strengths. Fernández is growing as a head coach.

I caught the 2nd half of the game. It wasn't looking too good for Canada they were down by 9. But they really turned it up in the 2nd half of the 4th quarter and came away with an impressive victory. Dillon Brooks had a heck of a two way game. I definitely like our chances in the QF vs. Slovenia.

I have no issue with him not there. I think having the group roughly the same age will help long term (though I hope both him and Jamal are available for Paris.

I don't think he's ever played for the national basketball team, despite numerous opportunities. But now when they go to the Olympics he'll join them?

He has played with Canada several times -- last time being summer of 2021 when he was one of the few NBA players that tried to lead Canada to qualify later that summer for the 2021 Olympics. He actually played great that year for Canada.

He also played with Canada a number of times up to and before 2016 I think (don't have the exact year, maybe it was 15 or 17) at both the senior and junior levels. He had issues with coaching / and or administration and left the program for a number of years.

Canada Basketball asked players to make a 3 year commitment to the program last summer (for 2022, 2023, 2024). As Wiggins had just reached the NBA final he felt he was unable to commit for the full period. He also missed most of the 2023 NBA season for personal issues, so understandable why he could not make this summer.

He has played a fair bit with Basketball Canada over the years, so i think he should be allowed back for 2024 if he chooses to.

For players that have never given their time to Basketball Canada, I don't think the same leeway should be given.

Cool. Hopefully he and Murray join the team.

This is supposedly to be Canada's best team ever with the most NBA players but still missing 2 key players.

Sometimes family matters, there's a comfort zone between Shai and his cousin Nikeil Alexander Walker who plays for the Timberwolves. It works for Canada.

Both favorites lost USA/Canada go down. Team USA were huge favorites going into tournament eliminated by Germany. Canada goes down to Serbia.
