This incident is getting almost no attention in national media, but it should.
SUMMARY: In March 2023, Canadian Kiara Agnew, 23, and her boyfriend Ryan Friesen, 26, went on holiday to Cancun, Mexico, to celebrate Kiara's upcoming 24th birthday.
After two days at a resort, on March 3, 2023, hotel workers discovered blood splatter in a common area and went to get a mop and bucket to clean it up. Inside a supply closet they found Kiara, who was unconscious and had been severely beaten and was covered with blood. Lying next to her asleep was her boyfriend, Ryan, who had Kiara's blood and tissue on his person and had -- quote -- "extremely swollen" hands.
Autopsy reports allegedly revealed DNA evidence of Kiara’s attacker under her fingernails, as well as her blood and tissue on Ryan’ Friesen's body.
Police were summoned and arrested and detained Ryan Friesen for the crime of "femicide".
It's not in this particular article, but Kiara's friends and family have shared on social media written correspondence from Kiara detailing the extensive physical abuse she suffered at her boyfriend's hands dating back to 2021, which was presented at Ryan Friesen's trial in Mexico.
Despite the piles of evidence against him, Ryan Friesen was found "innocent" of murdering Kiara Agnew.
According to Kiana's family's lawyer, "a judge found Ryan Friesen innocent because ‘injuries on his fists and body do not correspond to the injuries caused to Kiara Agnew.’ " It should be noted that all criminal trials in Mexico are judge-only trials -- there's never a jury.
A great big WTF?
