My father can't breath through his nose when he's standing up, only when hes laying down. We have see numerous doctors and nothing seems to work. I know its tough but my father won't do anything. All he does is lay in bed. Gets up to eat and use the bathroom. Doesn't exercise or anything. I know can be tough, we tell him to do stuff but he blames everything on his nose, can't breath through his nose. Is he overacting? anybody here that can't breath through nose and how are you dealing with it? thx

One cause of breathing difficulty is arrythmia (Pat Quinn and Brian Mulroney had similar symptoms), but he would feel his pulse at his neck being erratic or high, as well as weak or having a lack of energy.
The other thing might be some obstruction of the nasal passageway.
Have you tried those breath strips? Maybe it's psychological, but the anectodal evidence suggests that these are quite popular aids.

its sad, cause all the doctors don't think the nose is a high priority and they just push it off to the side.

yep tried those, nasal massages, accupunture and nothing

On second thought, what about allergies? Have you had allergy tests done? Pets?

Okay one last suggestion. What about going to a sleep disorder clinic? Could it be sleep apnea? They can monitor his sleeping patterns overnight. That might prove once and for all that he's not able to breath through his nose, and the frequency or severity of it.

doctors include specialists. He has one of those machines for sleep apnea.

He should see an ENT doctor, could be a deviated septum which would require a minor surgery. If not the doctor will at least prescribe nasal spray which might help.

(2) Has he ever had X-rays or some other imaging device done to determine if he has some form of blockage, perhaps due to a tumour in the sinus cavities? This may require further surgery.
The eating + lying in bed + lack of exercise ...is he overweight? I had the same problem in reverse--breating through the nose was easier standing up, virtually impossible lying down. Some cardio work--yes, it was hard at the start--helped tremendously, where I only allowed myself to breath through my nose. I'm not sure if it was the sustained nose-breathing while I exercised or the weight loss that made the big difference, but weight loss isn't bad anyhow if he's overweight.
I also tried the nostrel-spreader strips, and though they did help, it got expensive and the sides of my nose got very raw.

its been about 5 years. hes 68 and not overweight. He doesn't exercise, after he eats, he lays down. He won't list to anybody. He can blow his nose and theres no blockage or tumors.

I had minor surgery to remove my adenoid tonsil. After which everything has been fine ever since. I know you say you've been to doctors have any mentioned this?
uses the device when he sleeps at night, not when he naps. Complains all the time during the day.
Does he use the sleep apnea device every time he lies down to sleep or nap?
Does he complain only when he's NOT using the device?

I've had allergies, hayfever, and mild asthma all of my life. As a result at times I've substantial trouble breathing thru my nose. My dentist could tell right away - he called me a "mouth breather".
From what you said it doesn't sound like it though.
