Wrestling legend Lou Albano dead at 76

Los Angeles (AP) - Captain Lou Albano, the charismatic professional wrestler who appeared in Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Wanna Have Fun video, has died. He was 76.

World Wrestling Entertainment confirmed the death on its website.

Albano performed with WWE from 1983 to 1996, when he was inducted into its hall of fame.

He began his wrestling career in Canada in 1953.

Albano expanded his fan base greatly when he played Lauper's father in the video for her hit single on a fledgling MTV in 1983. He later claimed to be the catalyst for her success, according to WWE.

Wow, flashback!!!!

I'm not a pro wrestling fan, but have been on the fringe in my earlier days. Lou was an entertainer.

My god this is not true. He was in the WWWF (aka: WWE) way back in the 70's. Too bad the Associated Press (AP) got another cock-sucker to write incorrect information and then viral it all across the world.

Half right, he was a wrestler long ago but was a manager during the 80's and 90's.

I am fully right. He managed Ken Patera in 1977, keep going back and back and back as he managed many wrestlers before that as well under Vince McMahon Sr., like The Lumberjacks, Ivan Koloff, the list was endless as was the 70's. He was a jobber with Altimore way before he became successful as The Captain.

.... and he wrestled in the 60's as one of the Sicilians and early 70's as I said. His first championship win as a manager was was in 1971 with Ivan Kolloff. His career covered almost 45 years.

Probably publicizing more for the WWF days and not the WWWF days back in the 70's, to be technical.

But besides that point, it's sad to see him go, I wonder what kind of tribute WWE will do for him?

The AP writer called it the WWE in 1983, when it was the WWF. Before that the WWWF was also the WWF (and the WWE owns all of the WWWF). As for a WWE tribute, Albano and McMahon Jr. were not personal friends all that much, at least on-the-record. Albano was friends with his father. Albano was also in Lauper's "Time After Time" video too and was instrumental in creating that Cyndi Lauper/Roddy Piper riff, which really made wrestling what it is today with the MTV publicity.
