I managed to download a YouTube video with this software but there's no sound on the playback. What went wrong ?

Thanks for your help.
Never mind - I managed to get it work.

But I can't export the videos to an external hard drive, would I have to buy the upgraded version to do that ?

The FLV Downloader grabs the streaming video as .FLV (flash video) files. Even if you cannot watch it because you don't have the correct video player / codec, you should be able to move the video around freely because, afterall, it is only a computer file.

Exactly!
Can't see why he has a problem moving it to an Ext HDD.

The playback of the captured video is fine.

I'd locate the video in C drive and I right click "Send to external hard drive". On the external hard drive the video thumbnail shows up but it's only "Windows Live Movie Maker" and the actual video is not there. What am I doing wrong ?

I just drag & drop files from C-drive to the Ext drive. Maybe "Windows Live Movie Maker" is doing something to block this from happening.

I tried that but the result is the sme - only the "Windows Live Movie Maker " shows up. The actual video is not there.

Maybe "Windows Live Movie Maker " is splitting up that file somehow and hiding it somewhere else. Can you use another program?

Try Sothink Web Video Dowloader. It is part of Firefox. In my experience, it has worked well.

Maybe the "Send to ...." command only send a shortcut to the external drive?

Try highlighting the FLV file, right click, "Cut". Then open the external drive location you want to move the file to, right click and "Paste".
