HI guys,

I was just wondering if any one knows where I can get a deal on cell phones. I already have a plan, so I just want to buy an inexpesive phone. Something second hand or even refurbished.

Thanks for any tips in advance.

Don't buy used or refurbished - you can end up with a horror story. I.E. - something that doesnt work and no warranty or have to pay the previous owner's bill off before it is activated. Purchasing a cell phone also depends on your intended usage - prepaid = light usage( or no credit) monthly plans = medium to heavy usage and credit check. PM me if you need any more info

Thanks guys,

My plan is with Rogers. I now in most cases they ask you to change your plan to get a new phone, and that is not something I want to do.

If you have been on Rogers for 2yrs+, you are eligible for one of their "Hardware Upgrades". You'll get a phone at a cheap price, with the only catch being that they ask you to renew for (1 or 2) years. If you've been on that long, or use the phone for business etc, you're not likely to leave, so go for it.

If you haven't been, explain to their customer service what happened and if you're close, they'll still come thru. If not, tell them you are going to have to cancel your plan. They'll transfer you to the "Save That Customer" Dept, and they'll most likely help you out with a phone.

If all that fails, buy a 2nd hand Rogers GSM phone (as you don't have to worry about some of the account issues EotD mentioned above), then go to a Rogers dealer and have them convert your account to GSM. It's most likely the cheapest way if all else fails.

But make sure you get one for your system
As well as verifing the provider will activate it.

Papa,
I've seen these on line and wondered about them myself. Have you actually bought and activated one of these? Which company?
Thanks

I never Purchaced one on-line
BUt do reccomend if you do use your VISA so you have recourse to nulify the deal, should it prove to be poor quality or unuseable.

You might want to get a Rogers refurb that is unlockable. An unlocked GSM phone can be used on any network by changing SIM cards. I am now using a Rogers Nokia 3590 on Fido. A good source for info on unlocking GSM phones is:

http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/index.php

You'll see here which makes/models/networks are unlockable. They'll also calculate unlock codes for you (gratis!) given your phone's serial number, etc. Some people will try to sell you the same codes on Ebay.

That is so true. I didn’t get a free phone but I was able to get the voice message, call waiting and call display for no extra charge. I guess we have to complaint and whine to get what we want in life.

... Long Distance SuperSaver, text messaging... don't even ask what plan I'm on... they don't exactly list it in the plans they offer new customers. :D Amazing what you can get for about $10/month...
