I am so fed up with TD bank or Canada Trust or whatever they wish to call themselves now.
They nickel and dime me for every friggin thing, to allow me the honour of letting them hold my money.
I hate having to keep a ridiculous minimum balance to avoid monthly fees. I hate their ATM chargers. I hate seeing three tellers working when there's 8 countets and a lineup.
I hate their "custody" charge at TD Waterhouse if my trading account is not active.
How many billions they make last year?

What the best other options out there?

Because I'm about to pull the plug on these assholes after a 30yr relationship.

Don't get me started. If you think all that's bad, try dealing with their Estates department!

That's great, unless you actually need to use branch services (eg. Bank drafts), or create an investment account. It's sad, but I think that TD is the best option out there for full-service banking.
I have done wire transfers and money orders with PC. They mail the money order so you have to wait for that to arrive but they do wires quickly and efficiently.

You can open investment accounts elsewhere and PC will happily electronically link anything to your account you can get a cheque for then let you transfer in and out online at no charge.

I don't see the need for in person banking unless your teller has big tits that jiggle when she bends over to open the cash drawer.

All banks are evil, but what are you going to do put money in your socks? The alternates (PC Financial, ING Direct, etc.) aren't alternates either because getting at your cash is a real hassle. At least you can find TD ATM's just about anywhere: I think there's half a dozen just in the Eaton Centre alone. The only real solution is to use plastic (debit or credit) for as many transactions as possible. Then you never have to worry about finding an ATM.

No sh*t!!!!!!! The worst experience of my life. My mom passed in Dec of 09. TD Cleaned out her account slowly paying off a small loan she had insurance on. Once the funds ran out there was a balance of a couple of hundred dollars left on her loan which they starting calling me to pay in January of this year!!! I very politely told them that despite providing all of the necessary documents proving the loan had insurance, the death certificate etc... They continued to debit her account which was effectively theft on their part and that they could take a flying leap off a short pier. I never heard from them again.

Whatever alternative you have in mind will be just as bad or even worse.

I'm with Mr. Deeds. Been with PC Financial for years and they are awesome.
And you CAN get bank drafts from them. They are issued at a CIBC branch.

Yes, with ING it's a bit of a hassle but with PC Financial it's just as easy as with CIBC (easier in fact, there are PCF machines in many supermarkets too).

For ING that is true. You know that PC is really CIBC in disguise and you can use any CIBC bank machine right? They magically become PCF machines when you insert your card.

Not to mention that when TD gives you a mortgage they register it as a "collateral" mortgage, which makes it very difficult and expensive to switch to another lender at renewal time.

This is being done by several of the major banks now. Their excuse is that it makes it easier for them to lend you more money, such as a future Line Of Credit, against your home, without your having to re-qualify. But their primary purpose is to register as much value in your home as they can in their name, and to prevent you from going to competitive lenders both during the mortgage term and at renewal time.

IIRC much of PC Financial banking service, cheque accounts, savings accounts, loans, mortgages are run by CIBC,

Free for $11 a year ?
My road side assistance is free.

My CC has an annual of $120, and it comes with road side assistance much better then CAA and I get % cash back on purchases. However my chequeing account waives the annual CC fee. As well with that chequeing account I get a free safety deposit box, and borderless account for CDN/USD. Lastly my savings account has no fees and I forgot too that because my chequeing account stays above 5K, I actually have not paid a single service fee in months. Normally I would have to pay 10.95/month for my chequeing. Or maybe it is 14.95. Can't remember as I have not had to pay anything in months. They didn't have any small SDB's so I upgraded to a medium and pay $25.00 a year for it. That is all I have paid this year.

Can not complain about TD at all.

Switch to CIBC...............

:thumb:
I've had accounts with Canada Trust, CIBC and now RBC (been there for 15 years). I liked Canada Trust the best but it was hard to find machines. CIBC by far was the worst and I still hear horror stories about them to this day. I remember taking my great aunt into her local branch and the account manager was so clueless he thought all interest income was taxed at 50% (I kid you not).

To the OP - all the banks are the same. If I go over my overdraft by even $0.10 they charge me a $5 od handling fee. If I transfer money from my corp account after 6pm to cover a cheque in my personal account they hit me with the charge as well. Its bullshit.

I calculated that I paid RBC over $2K in interest and bank charges last year (credit line, avion visa and 2 bank accounts). And they just keep upping the fees while giving me less.
