Great news, sports fans. On this day, July 4, 2013, Independence Day in the U.S., on the south shore of Brooklyn, the fourth largest town in the U.S., amid the newly-renovated storm-ravaged grounds of Coney Island, a great sporting event of monumental proportions, occurred.

Joey Chestnut, the reigning King of the IFOCE, and his female counterpart, Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas, both retained their crowns this auspicious day. Joey thrilled and amazed his many fans, about 30,000 in attendance, with his epic inhalation of 69, yes sir, sixty-nine Nathan's hot dogs with accompanying buns. Mr. Chestnut was invariably thrilled with his win. He indicated that he is striving to hit 70 hot dogs and then possibly retire.

Sonya Thomas, who holds many IFOCE records, including eating the nine-pound burger at the Plaza Hotel several years ago, won the women's portion of the contest. While she and Juliet Lee were initially tied at the end of ten minutes regulation time, the judges awarded her the crown because she had consumed 3/4 of a hot dog more. That is not bad for Sonya, all 105 pounds of her.

This contest was shown on ESPN and is considered by the network to be their prized July 4 event.

Subsequent to watching Chestnut's win on tv yesterday, I have to wonder. This may be a silly question, but, was Chestnut full after eating 69 hot dogs.

He appeared to be comfortable after receiving his immense trophy for the seventh time.
