I just heard from a wireless industry insider that

http://cityfido.ca/en/flash.html
are coming to Toronto in June.

For $45 a month you will able to make unlimited local calls day or night.

During the coming weeks expect to be bombarded with promotions from the competition who'll try to persuade you to buy extra phones for your sister, girlfriend, grandma, cat or dog

the catch is that opposed to fidos regular 10cents roaming charge when you are on this plan and you roam you get charged 20cents a minute
as well the $45 doesnt include call id, voice mail and tax (probably adds up to be around $60) and i believe there is a $50 sign up fee to get onto the plan
personally i think it is still really worth it as my phone bills are more than the 60 bucks a month EASY
so really the catch isnt much of a catch at all

Oh wait I just scanned some other threads yes I do... :p

True Fixed rate wireless plans are going to happen eventually. As with the first land lines which charged by the local call and internet that charged by the hour, it's just a matter of time til wireless phone plans evolve.

That's a damn good point WhaWhaWha... however I hardly think that Fido is gonna be the trailblazer in this new frontier. They don't have the infrastructure for that sort of thing nationwide.

(anybody with a Fido phone will tell you once you get outside the city... you're S.O.L.)

Trailblazer? New frontier?

Fido is one of only two providers in Canada who offer third generation networks, aka GSM. All the others are old technology. Fido IS a trailblazer in the new frontier of GSM phones.

Sounds like Fido's just trying some desperate moves to gain subscribers back. They tend to lose them over time due to there horrible customer service. If you ever need help or have questions with why they billed you so much... they are more then unfriendly.... they are down right rude and even hang up on you.

2 years ago they sold me a T28 world phone that they claimed I could use on my upcoming trip to Australia and Thailand. I set everything up with them, telling them where I would be, what cities, etc... They told me I'll all set and as soon as I get off the plane in Oz it will work. Well I get to Melbourne and all the Fido wants to do is say 'SOS Calls Only' So I wait 2 days and call them long distance from the hotel phone ... the pricks tell me that I never told them I was going to Australia and it will take 3 days for them to activate my international roaming. So I say OK good do that... after 3 days nothing! So I call again and the pricks tell me again I never told them anything... like what the F@#k is going on here? So I'm told by an Australian friend to just buy a local SIM card and install this in my phone and use the phone locally in Oz. Well we go out and buy a SIM for $40 and when I put it in the phone it says "Wrong SIM" So I call Fido again and now the ASSHOLES tell me "You can't put any other SIM in our phone, it's LOCKED to Fido!" what? I paid for this phone outright and they locked it on me???? So I end up telling the pricks to go to hell and when I got to Bangkok, Thailand I take the phone into a cell phone shop and the hacker dudes in there unlocked my Fido phone, reprogramming it... I get a Thai SIM and in 10 minutes I'm all set! The Thai girls can now call me locally on my "Unlocked Fido" ! Not only that when I went back to Australia I was able to use the Aussie SIM there too... when I got back home I called up Rogers who after telling them of my bad experience with Fido they sent me a FREE Rogers SIM and I've been with Rogers using the same Fido phone ever since.

A week later after I got back home, I get a call from Fido from this women... she says to me "Sir, we understand you need International roaming" I say "yeah like last month, and now your doing something about it?" I just tell her to CANCEL my service and that I have gone to Rogers.

The bottom line here is if Fido ran there company more professionally they would have made a lot of money off of me with the $3.00 a minute international roaming and as a customer for years to come… however they just pushed me to extremes of having the phone hacked to bypass them all together… they lost me as a good customer and over time they have lost so many other people I know. I gave them a more then fair chance and they just royally pissed me off!

good grief - I need new glasses - I thought that read $45 unlimited local incalls...
It does .... I'm just saying to be careful dealing with the Fido pricks. They tell you one thing and you get another.
