Computer HELP - Application keeps freezing

I am suffering from a bit of a pain in the ass problem here and wondering if any terbite might have an answer.

My computer keeps locking up while I am working.

For no reason, the program will lock up. I go into the task manager and get the note "not responding"

Could be outlook express, could be while surfing the net.

I have tried downloading the newest version of explorere from MSN, I have tried downloading the windows (XP) updates, i have tried defragging my harddrive.

NOTHING seems to help.

You will be typing away, like now, and all of a sudden, boom, everything locks up.

I have to end task, which loses everthing.

It only seems to affect one application, not all, and does not require the system to be rebooted, only shutting down the affected program and reopening.

This is a pain in the ass!

Anyone have any information?

Could this be a windows problem associated with XP updates?

I recently purchased Norton Internet security, and virus protection (no viruses found). I have disabled the internet security and still the problem persists.

I was not having this problem before NORTON internet security, but i have disabled it, and the problem did not start IMMEDIATELY upon purchasing Norton.

Dana had the same problem a while back on her win2k machine.
It was mostly IE that was locking up but it was a pain in the ass.

I went to do a virus scan and noticed that her scanner was missing. It hadn't been just shut down but the folder and all references to the program were completely gone, and she hadn't uninstalled it!

I re-installed the scanner and found that she had been infected with a worm (can't remember which one). I cleaned it all up and everything has been fine since.

I realize that you said you had found no viruses and that the problem started after installing Norton. While it seems Norton may not be the culprit because the problem did not start immediately after installation, it is a possibility.

You may also want to try completely uninstalling Norton IS and your scanner (no big deal especially if you still have the disks) and install AVG, it is a free virus scanner at www.grisoft.com

Norton is generally a decent product but I do not have much faith in Symantec or McAffee since being infected with 5 different viruses a few years ago that neither of them picked up on.

Try running with just the AVG for a while and see if the problem goes away, if it doesn't you can reinstall your old products and continue troubleshooting from there. Just make sure that you uninstall one virus scanner before you install another.

And some people wonder why it costs so much to deal with software problems

yeah, mcafee and symantec arent particularly good in either case.

I've been pushing grisoft AVG on my corporate clients [enterprise edition] and its being very well received.

my oppinion of winblows XPerimental remains the same: YUCK!

win2k SP2 and Redhat 8 are both better overall in terms of system requirements and stability.
