My CPU has been real shitty lately, running real slow.

I run ccleaner, adware-SE, spybot and use AVG Antivirus but to no avail it still ran slow.

Next thing I did was go to RUN and type 'msconfig' and click STARTUP

and click 'Disable All' and click OK. That usually helps, but not this time.

Someone at work (IT guy) said to check out ALT+CTRL+DELETE and click Processes to see if anything looked out of the ordinary.
Nothing would delete anyhow, so I figure all is good.

I took matters into my own hands and disconnected the:
Phone Router
Router
Modem

Guess what happened upon startup? Everything is running fast and efficiently.

Anyone care to explain this?

A couple of things right off the bat:

Many and I do mean MANY applications that you load have an option for auto update. These processes (what used to be called TSRs) run and load everytime windows loads. If you're connected to the net these processes are notified and start scanning looking for updates. Even if they don't find one they still take up processing power/memory. (even windows virtual memory).

One thing you might want to try is to see if there are any updated drivers for your net access equipment.

I am also assuming when you say "modem" you're talking about a adsl or similar, NOT a 14.4 baud modem correct?

When was the last time you did a system clean? Meaning reload windows totally? You'd be surprised at how much junk accumulates over time......I try to do it once a year and yes, the system is lightning fast afterwards.....

I'm in IT so I'll explain..

1. The network card on your computer is either defective or needs updated drivers, or re-installation of them...

if your using a laptop, you will hv to replace motherboard, or just deal with drivers; if you're using a desktop, then you can either replace the network card if it's not integrated onto your motherboard, deal with drivers, or replace mobo, or add a network card...

2. You're modem is fine (phone router???)...you're broadband router might need to be upgraded in firmware...

those are my best two solutions...try it out and report back to me..PM if necessary..

This is one reason I switched from Windows to Linux, Ubuntu.
You don't have any of those problems.
You just turn the PC on and run it.

No need to endlessly run ccleaner, adware-SE, spybot.
No need for any endless anti-virus scans, registry cleaner or registry mechanic.
No need to 'defrag' the HDD.
What you get is an OS that's even more stable than a Mac.
One other thing Linux does not accumulate crap like Windows does, slowing it down after 6 months.
Best of all it's FREE, along with all the apps and programs you will need!

Did a dual boot system at first so I can run either Windows or Linux, to learn it. I found it as easy to pick up as the Mac OS. Now I spend >95% of the time on linux and don't miss all those required scans to keep Windows running smooth.

The Mac might have maybe a handful of viruses that could affect it. There are also Linux viruses out there. Don't be fooled just because Ubuntu itself hasn't been hit yet, I still set up firewall and anti-virus software when I ran Ubuntu.

Macs may have less viruses, but the Operating system is full of profile errors, com.apple corruptions, plugin and resident program errors.. Mac is horrible in itself.
I don't know what you're using but I've used a Mac for almost 20 years. I've never seen any of the stuff that you've mentioned nor heard of it being mentioned by Mac forum members. What were you running?

Security in Ubuntu 8.04 .... explained in simple words
There are exploits for the Mac that have yet to found in the Wild ..... there are Macro Virus's for the Mac that still pop up here and there for the Mac that are MS Office exploits .... but there do not exist in the wild any Virus for OSX.
definition of a virus
"A computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself and infect a computer without permission or knowledge of the user. The term "virus" is also commonly used, albeit erroneously, to refer to many different types of malware and adware programs."

Like i said there are exploits for the Mac ..... usually patched before found in the Wild .......

9 times out of 10 its a trojan / spyware. Before you buy any hardware review your processes (ctrl-alt-del) and start up programs (msconfig) and Add/Remove programs. Post a list of the items here or PM me if you wish a critique. Most malware looks for an Internet connection and if it finds one does its nasty business as quickly as possibly using all bandwidth and cpu power normally.

My 2 1/2 cents.

This sounds more like a critique of Windows than Mac. The Windows filesystem and bloated registry are far more prone to those problems than the by far more stable Mac. Windows is known for frequent crashes, lockups etc, not Mac or Linux. Windows crashed plenty of times for me, at least once a day back with Win98! Only saw a Mac crash once, in the Apple Store when a salesman tried showing off what it cound do. He tried to run too many apps at once to show what it could do and it locked up on him.
In the year I've been running linux, haven't had a crash/lockup yet.....knock on wood...:)

As far as linux security goes this excellent article points out how it is handled on Ubuntu. Ubuntu stands head & shoulders above Windows here.

What are/were you trying to run?

Guys the original OP is running Windows, Not Mac or Linux.
Can we just try and help him out with that.
Kaspersky is good, currently I'm running Avira seems good so far.
How long ago did you reformat? I'm another fresh install once a year. But I also run full virus and malware scans at least one a week, run cccleaner, use O&O defrag pro once a month and also use Your Uninstaller to remove programs, seems to remove all crap from registry that usually isnt removed using add/remove or the programs uninstaller.
Not sure what the network stuffs about, this should usually only affect your internet/network speed. Is your HD partitioned?
Hope some of this Windows stuff helps. Nothing against Mac or linux both good OP systems but the majority of people are still running MS or dual booting to meet there needs.

Being in IT tech support for 12 Years, I will give it a go based on my knowledge. I came across a similar senario when I was doing tech support in Africa and it turned out to be a malicious hacker software using the PC for sending out spam.

This type of software is not a virus or ad-aware so the main utilities you have would not pick it up.

The way I discovered it was by using a windows start up monitor program called Codestuff Starter

The software that was running knew how to hide itself from showing up in MSConfig but since codestuff is not a standard program, it was not able to hide from view here.

once I saw the entry in codestuff I was able to proceed removing from the hard drive. If you find this the case, post back here or PM me and I will give you the steps for removing it. It is very trickly to remove and you will have to battle with wits to win the war.

Sorry this was over a year ago and do not remember the name of the actual program controlling the PC.
