A condo building in Florida collapsed this morning. Very tragic.

I know some you guys in this on this forum are pretty smart, so I was wondering how this is even possible?

I'm going with a sinkhole. Florida has lots of those.

I looked up Champlain Towers on google maps and its a 12-storey building.
It basically got pancaked so I doubt there are many survivors

The building was undergoing roof work, but it's unknown whether this was a factor in the collapse.

Sinkhole was my immediate thought.
They are notorious in Florida.

I'm unable to verify, but holy shit this is crazy if true.
The entire pink part is what collapsed.

It happened at 2am, absolute worst time

It does not appear to be a sinkhole. Something in the columns/pillars gave way. Maybe some of the roof work precipitated this tragedy. They've pulled out 35 survivors but they expect casualties to increase as they clean up the rubble. Sad.

Wow did not know it was that much. And at that time of night most people at home as you note...I too will go sinkhole as first suspected culprit. Curious as to how many residents normally live there. The news only said 37 pulled out 1 dead. How many possible? 12 floors...55 units in the collapsed section ...1-4 bedrooms...assuming 2 means a bit under 100 people missing...

Depends. Many could be snow birds, Air BnB, etc.

As for the rest one cause won't be the answer. Salt air corrosion, sinkhole, poor materials, construction. Pick two, three, four, probably more I wouldn't know about.

What a nightmare, to be sleeping in your home, and it suddenly collapses.

I did not know it was that much. From what I was watching, it kind of looked like just white part type of size that collapsed, but at the back instead where it's pink.

If that's true it was that whole pink area, that's a lot.

The first photo in post 2 is not the building in question.

If you click on the above link, you will see that the building was constructed on what appears to be some sort of man-made jetty or lagoon. That means that the building would have needed to be constructed on piles. Piles are very expensive.

Profit over safety is prevalent over there, more-so than anywhere else.

But Canada-man probably knows more than I do about the situation.
