I need some help here. Is there a restaurant in Toronto in which the chef cooks in front of you? just the way you see it on TV.
I am thinking of Japanese and Korean places. If you know of a place, please let me know. Thanks.

BTW. I am not from TO so this is why I ask here.

Downtown TO
Hello 19

There are quite a few restaurants that fit this description in Toronto. If you are planning to visit, perhaps you might want to post the general area you'll be in so that we can suggest places close to where you will be.

In the Downtown area, there is a Japanese steak house in the Royal York Hotel, right across the street from Union Station (the main train terminal). There's also one called "Yamatto" in Yorkville (the yuppie part of town); your cabbie will know where that is.

There are dozens of such places in Toronto. Let us know the area you will be in and I'm sure you'll get a whole whack of reccomendations.

Zog.

P.S. Enjoy your visit!

Other than Japanese & Korean places, quite a few restaurants have chef's tables. These tables are usually tucked away right in the kitchen. You can experience the whole hustle & bustle of a restaurant kitchen while keeping an eye on what's being cooked. Often the chef will whip up something small and special for you in order to test a new recipie. Sitting at the chef's table is different, but generally is interesting.

Kitchen Tables

As others have mentioned above there are a number of places that have what are known as "Kitchen Tables". One of the best is in the kitchen of the King Edward hotel and I have had a number of memorable dinners there. It is in a separate area off the main kitchen and the menu is designed by the Executive Chef just for your group. The food and wines are specially selected for that evening and you get to see how the kitchen works.

I have used this several times to entertain important clients from overseas and they all love it. I know the Metropolitan Hotel also does this and I have heard the Four Seasons and Centro do it as well. You normally have to book at least 3 0r 4 weeks in advance. I also think a number of other up market restaurants do this including Jump, Auberge au Pommier, North 44, Biffs and others have a similar deal but it is not something they promote and is saved for "special customers". Call the restaurant you are interested in and ask. You will be surprised at how many do it but they don't advertise it because they don't have to.

BEST

The Best Chef's Table in the City is At the King Edward Hotel on King Street.
They set your table right in the Kitchen, the Chef cooks the Whole menu in front of you and explains what is the recipe as he cooks...Just fantastic! you can also see other cooks cooking for the other restaurants.
The Chef cooks a "One Time" menu just for you and will never use this menu again(so he says).
The Experience is Thrilling....you are sure to get the BEST sex ever from your girls after that one...

Only downside : Minimum of 8 people, $150 per pax just for the Food....(Needless to say that the wines are pricey too..)

Overall Experience is about $300 a pop but it is well worth doing once in your life.

I second Paul's vote for Katsura (no "p" I think... and I prefer it that way ;-)... their power lunch is very good... especially if you are there at the same time as the IT XMAS lunch (hey, a man can dream).

Nic... that sounds like an awesome meal. You should make it a pre-TERB party event ;-)
