Cops in the US are not there to enforce laws for safety, rather to make as much money for their department, city, and county. Policing has become a business.

They are eager to make up as many charges as possible, have your car towed (they are friends with the tow truck drivers/company). The more charges, the more revenue, and the better the officer looks.

That is why 1/3 of Americans have a criminal record.

.

By the age of 23, half of all black and white men have been arrested:

I remember once when a car brake checked me. Of course I slammed on my brakes. The cop behind me was pissed off at me, thinking I brake checked him. He interrograted me, and then questioned me whether I had drugs or weapons in the car, and said he was going to search my car. He never did, and eventually I got away with warning, but it goes to show that they will pull you over and look for any reason to charge you. Be very careful when driving in the US.

It's good advice to not give the cops ANYTHING you don't need to give them. Keep answers short and on-point, don't volunteer anything, don't sign anything without a lawyer, and if you get the feeling this is going south it's better to say you'd rather have your lawyer present than continue answering questions... You never know what will affect you in what jurisdiction and all you need to be is 1 inch over a state line to have those laws end your freedom.

Also, and this is a HUGE issue with especially younger people, SPEAK UP AND DON'T SLUR YOUR WORDS. Just speak clearly, look them in the face, and respond. "Yes sir, no sir..."

If you're pulled over for a broken taillight and it's turning into a whole "thing" then ask if you're free to go. If the answer is no it may be a better idea to get a lawyer involved BEFORE you answer something potentially incriminating. Remember, in the US (at least for now) and Canada you're entitled to legal representation. If you don't have your own lawyer (I don't have one on call) then tell them you don't have a lawyer personally but you need one to represent you during questioning.

What with the Orange Emperor deciding he wants to just deport anyone to anywhere he wants it's best to avoid ending up in custody in the US.

In Canada it's not so dire, but the advice to avoid volunteering information and keeping answers short and to the point stands.

I have friends who are cops, I know that if they THINK you're guilty they'll find something to charge you with while they figure out how to get you on the other thing.

Of course, none of this fixes racism/sexism (or other prejudicial) issues or issues faced by people who struggle in social settings, which gives false red-flags to cops as bad as racism or sexism does, but at least if you do your best to expedite the experience and get to a ticket and/or a warning and get released then you're not in custody. If the ticket is bullshit, say nothing and just challenge it in court. Pissing the cop off is only going to make them want to fuck with your day.

Sorry, I forgot to add this, but it's CRUCIAL.

Nobody likes it, but understand the POWER DYNAMIC you're in here. They have the ability to really fuck up your day/life so just be super polite, respectful, and as amiable as you can.

My ex-wife pulled bullshit with Border Agents when crossing (she was middle-eastern so fucking not smart to start with), she said she didn't like that this idiot was giving her a hard time. That is NOT a good reason to end up getting your car searched and having them find one tiny hint of something they can charge/detain you on.

Eat the shit sandwich with a smile, thank them for their time and their service to the community, and they'll get out of your face and business as fast as possible.

why do you keep posting click bait videos that all seem to occur in the United States? Do you think American cops harassing black people is something new? This has been happening down there for over 100 years.

Man gets pulled over for headlight, interrogated with 100 questions. Gets pissed off when asked why.

The guy who got pulled over posted in the comments, the police pull over anyone from out of state to generate revenue. His headlight wasn’t even out.
