About a year ago I had an Intel motherboard short out on me because I was messing around with one of the plug in connectors while the computer was turned on, a spark happened and the computer went flat out dead.
Anyway, I took the E6300 Conroe chip that was on the board, put it on a new board and set up a new computer with a new board right away because I needed to get that computer back up and running with other parts.
But anyway, I related that story to someone recently while discussing computers and he said I should have sent the fried intel motherboard back to Intel and they'd ship me a replacement one.
Well, I still had the fried board in it's original box sitting around; so, I got a RMA from Intel and they shipped me a replacement board like he told me they would, no problem.
Anyway the question I have is, I bought a used E6600 Conroe chip from someone and my question is: I still have my original disk drive from this system and I'm wondering will the computer work with the E6600 or will I have to reformat the hard drive.
It was operating with the E6300. The E6600 has an extra 2 mb of cache memory (2mb vs 4 mb) and it operates at 2.4 GHz instead of 1.86 ghz; but, other than that the core chip is same.
So, I'm just wondering if someone has experience with swapping out a cpu for a closely related CPU. Will the computer keep marching without a beat or will it freak out and force me to re format the hard drive and start all over with a new Windows XP install.
Thanks for any input.
