I was in a mall this afternoon, shopping at EB Games... When I got my goods rung up, and handed them my photo Mastercard, I was asked for photo ID to accompany it. I asked why my photo on the card was not good enough. They insisted on seeing photo ID.. I told them where to go.

Does anyone here know if the Merchant Agreement with Amex, Mastercard or Visa allows merchants to ask for photo ID to process a payment by credit card?

was the back of your CC signed? There is a lot of more fraud that happens around the holidays, so they are protecting themselves, and just doing their job. No need to give them a hard time.

That happened to me, many years ago, when I was younger and more hot-headed. Also at a computer game store.

I was also pissed at the time, but now that I'm older, I'm more mature with it.

The picture on a credit card can be faked by clever thieves with good equipment.

Also, if the credit card is fraudulent, the merchant can end up eating the loss.

If you think that's bad, one time, a retail clerk called the credit card company, and handed the phone over to me. I had to answer a bunch of questions about my ID and my most recent transactions.

I think EB has a policy of two pieces of ID, so whether or not your CC has your photo on it doesn't make a difference - you still need a second piece of ID.

Credit card agreement has little or nothing to do with whether they will accept you credit card with out an accompanying piece of identification.
I first ran into this in the states a few years back......

i was not asking about the cardholder agreement... I was asking if merchant agreement allowed this.

It is a brand new card, signature is clear.

I don't think I should have to show photo ID to use my card... so I will not shop there again.

In my opinion... It is always in your best interest when a retailer asks for photo I.D. I have had my credit used with fraudulent transactions even with my credit card never leaving my side. They made a fraudulent duplicate of my card. They could just have easily put a picture on it.

I wish they asked the people using that card for I.D. would have saved me so much hassle.

I now thank the retailer when they ask for I.D.

The problem is that there are too many shops with teenagers working in them with these so called "card readers"

There's no law stating you can't ask for photo ID. If you don't want to show it, then don't. The merchant agreement does put the onus on the vendor to insure the owner of the card is making the purchase. If you're not comfortable producing the photo ID, then don't buy the product. Why whine about it?

Never had a retail clerk ask me for photo ID when I used a credit card, though I did get a call once from my bank (CIBC) after I had used the card to make a purchase worth a few thousand dollars through an over-the-phone transaction (tuition at an out-of-province university). They called to confirm that it actually was me that made the purchase, and I for one was glad to know that somebody, somewhere was keeping an eye out for security purposes.

I don't think this has anything to do with the credit card or merchant agreements. I think it's just EB's policy for purchases over a set amount of money to ask for two pieces of ID.

Really, it's not that big a deal.

The Chinese can bang out a fake Credit card with ID in no time at all. I agree with others here that I rather be protected and have them ask for additional id. I don't know what the laws are governing them asking for the extra ID but that seems irrelevent.

http://consumerist.com/consumer/pri...u-to-show-id-with-your-credit-card-332516.php

this is what you are looking for. Not sure it's the same in Canada or not.

But for me showing the ID doesn't hurt but help us save alot of trouble from fraud.

remember when ever you go apply for phone or anything. You have to give them all the information.

If they just used that to fake a credit card under your name and go shopping worth a few thousand dollar.

How would you fell if they steal your information? or how would you fell if you lost your wallet.

How would you fell if the employee asked for ID and the person who got your CC or steal your information on your CC can't use it.

Showing a Picture ID doesn't take more than 5 sec. They just need to match the name on the card and return it to you. Nothing is copy so i don't see anything you have to worry here

There you go. No need to ask us, after all, is there?

I don't have a photo on my credit card yet, but for years instead of signing the back of my credit card I have written "Ask for Photo ID".

I have no problem with a merchant making darn sure it's me before charging my credit card.

IMO you overreacted.

I bought some photo gear at Black's this week and the sales guy asked to see photo ID. I didn't care much, and he didn't really look at it anyway...I held it up for a second and he said "OK" without looking up from his sales terminal. Must have been a store policy, not suspicions on his part toward me.

Extremely common in most of the world. Starting in Canada.

Learn to live with it or use cash.
