A friend of mine is convinced his SO is tracking his cell phone.

He took the usual steps, in getting new hardware and SIM card, but kept the same number.

This was done recently, but the evidence I see, suggests the tracking continues.

How is this possible ..on an ANDROID?

Any I.T. Or spy people can offer assistance?

If he's logged on to any Google service (I believe this includes anything using Google Play Services, which is basically impossible to avoid these days because it's used by so many apps) his entire movement history is stored on Google's servers by default. Also, "web & app activity" tracking is also turn on by default, which means all his searches and a lot of app activity is also stored on Google's servers, even if location services/location history/location sharing are independently set to not be shared, which can often give clear clues to his location.

He can go to http://myactivity.google.com and see what's being collected and work on turning that stuff off. Forensic tools can still be used later by someone with phone access to recover some information, but generally it's probably that stuff that his wife is looking at.

I'm assuming for 90% of the time he has nothing to hide but for the times he goes to see a lady just turn location services off on the phone so no tracking/recording.

Likely not, not with google anyway. I don't think there are any google services that integrate with texting apps. The cell phone manufacturers texting app may store it on their own cloud somewhere though. Also the provider may store and list texted numbers. I know Rogers displays all calls made on the bill but I don't know about texts.

This is the most likely cause - by default when setting up a new android phone its enabled. Have your friend login to the following site with his Google account. It will show his location history - if enabled. https://www.google.com/maps/timeline?pb

Now the reverse. What is the best way to track an iphone/android without the person's knowledge?
