I can attest to that. Once, as a child, I was bitten in the face by one of the little bastards, and I have avoided the breed since.
I agree with you. Peculiar how Terriers were basically bred for much the same purpose, but in my experience most are less "sharp" than Dachshunds.

Have known both types of weenies.

There is a breed (not very popular in the US) called a Manchester - another little dog and I have never seen one of them that wasn't plain mean.

When I was a kid, a friend of mine had a Pekinese named Ming.

He was the crusty little dog, but he was also teased unmercifully by my friends sister.

He would bite you as soon as look at you.

Using that tired logic one could say "no such thing as bad tigers.. just bad tiger owners.

The reality is that you only train any animal to a certain extent and it always amazes me how many dog owners are absolutely certain that their dog would never attack a child or someone else.

oOh KaAYy...

i agree Tarkus. I have family that work in Police K9 training and yes, no matter how good of an owner you are, there are dogs that want to kill or harm people by there own temperament.

My friend once had a really old Daschund (14 years old).

He was deaf, dumd and blind.

He was like Tommy, except instead of playing pinball, he bit people.

Here
They were originally bred for going after badgers (or was it wolverines), hence the long body and fearless aggressive attitude. But the only thing that makes them "bad" is how their owner treats them and trains them. Dachsunds are great family pets when raised properly.

The real problem is they climb on things - like the arm of a couch. Then they go for the nuts.

'Dachs' in German means 'badger'. So badger dog is the translation. As I recall, they fight like a badger, i.e. biting up and into the throat of other animals.

They are called that because they were bred to go down the tunnels of foxes and badgers and smoke out these animals.

Oops, didn't mean to suggest they were named after their fighting style. Just threw that in as a bit of info on the breed.

I love George Carlin's take on dogs. If aliens were viewing our planet and observed a human stooping down to scoop up the feces of the canine, who do you think they would suppose is the superior race?

Off topic, but I never miss a chance to throw in some Carlin. Wasn't he just here?

I am not sure what the right word is in english. I danish we call these dogs
"tunnel" dogs.

Recently one of the "royal" dachshunds attacked a guardsman at the castle in Copenhagen,
who needed 3 weeks off to recover.
