Anyone know of a good reasonably priced place to retrieve data off a harddrive? A friend's was damaged as it was knocked down via the table because of her dog. The enclosure is shot and she tried going to a store to save the data but even they couldn't do it.
So, next step up, data retrieval specialists. Anyone know of any?

What did they say about the drive? Whats the condition of it? Is it spinning but making grinding sounds?

dogs > cats.

I would think that cats knock things over way more than dogs. ;)

I believe that's what she said from what I remember.
Gonna ask her again.

Oh, just restore from your daily incremental backup that you run dilegently that takes almost no effort to setup and maintain.:D

Straight from my heart. I wish i had 50 cents for every time a client called me and said that their HD has died with ALLLLLLLLLLLLL of the pictures they have ever taken. When you let them know the cost of recovery (if it is at all possible) they have a fit. Its sad especially after i have shown them numerous ways to backup their most treasured files.:(

Very expensive

I have a few dead ones too and I have checked...

About $2000.00 perhaps $1000.00 if you are willing to wait. Werecoverdata is probably your best bet but man just what do they do to justify those fees? Does it go to NASA or a trip in the shuttle or are the tears of some rare endangered species or the leaves of some rare amazon plant required to fix it.

I don't understand with these economic times you figure there is a deal out there but no, there is no negotiation here minimum $1000.00 and up.

Well she's not too desperate, then again, she had all her pics and music on it.
The pics being most important, since it was her and her bf and now husband.
We'll see what she does, I sent her the link.

The companies that actually do this for a living (not familiar with WERECOVERDATA though) have the clean room to actually open up the hard drive and repair / replace the damaged component. This is assuming of course that the hard drive merely stopped working and not cause you dropped it and crashed the heads against the platter, thereby gouging your hard drive platters. Even so, the good companies have the technology to transfer the platter data to other hard drives.

And yes, they know you're desperate otherwise you wouldn't be calling them!

They do something that you and most other people can't, they get your crap off a drive that you can't get your crap off of yourself.
If the stuff is irreplaceable, how much do you think they should charge?

It is not exactly an easy process either you know.
