This is a bad day, the worst day for the family, his friends and fans. Hopefully, it will serve as a big wakeup call for the young, foolish and way too rich atheletes with more money than common sense. I am sorry to say it probably won't, and that's the real tragedy.

He lived quite a life in his 25 years, but was headed towards so much more. His skills were starting to take off ,and he paid his dues. This is horrible.

Such a big loss???

What about the 2 soldiers that were killed serving their county (I guess that was not "very sad news"?... no mention of that ... which I think is a little more significant than he death of a young hockey player

I had a friend of mine decapitated by a drunk driver. My friend was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time - he was as sober as a judge - but still paid for it due to someone else's stupidity.

Whois...those who serve in the military sign up for combat - their deaths are tragic indeed, and I have the deepest respect for those who serve their country. However, I think it is difficult to compare the two situations - tragic, yes, but not really comparible.

should heatley go to prison for manslaughter?
It depends on alot of things right now.
1) Is the Chief of Police a Predators fan
2) Is the DA a Predators fan.
3) Did the police charge him with reckless driving (I think that's what it's called).

If so, there could be a care for manslaughter. It will be interesting to see.....

I do know that if you are in a fight, you push your opponent, he falls, hits his head on the curb and dies, then they will convict you for manslaughter.

We'll see.

All around...it's a pretty way to start the day..

And as for Red...

Yes - he should go to prison for manslaughter - the very least reckless driving causing death - getting t-boned in an intersection is one thing - but speeding way over the posted limit isn't justifiable in any circumstance.

First, its the Atlanta Thrashers not the Nashville Predators.

Second, the DA will upgrade the charge this week to Vehicular Manslaughter now that Mr Snyder has died. There was already a pending felony charge of causing severe injury by reckless use of an automobile (or something like that).

Third, it is a very accurate statement to say it was a stupid mistake by a rich and reckless athlete. He split is Ferrari into 2 pieces by speeding at 130 kph through a residential street marked for 70 kph. It wasnt a Chevy, and he was almost double the speed limit, and it was on a residential road not the 407.

I've driven that same stretch of road 100 times, and its a little tough to imagine going over 100 kph.

The death of Mr Snyder is no more or less important than a soldier or an elderly woman, simply more newsworthy because of name recognition. We should all feel badly for his family, friends and teammates.

What's even sadder is that this kind of behaviour from Heatly wasn't new. He was like this all the time. He and anther player are known for tearing out of the parking lot after practice. They're young kids who, like so many of us, act on the present, not thinking of possible consequences.

I'm just surprised that his team nor his agent hadn't talked to him about being a little reckless. Not that I'm putting the blame on anyone else. Heatly is totally to blame but, a little advice from someone a little older, to settle down, might've helped to avoid this. Maybe.

There are a lot of stories that go unkown about the wildness, and recklessness of some players. Not just on this team but, in sports in general. Unfortunately fate wasn't with either of the two players that night.

Age has a lot to do with their reckless behaviour.
I am not blaming anyone but the one who caused the accident!
But, shouldn't these sports teams consider having something like a mentor program ... established players with the newbies.
It just seems like such a waste when words could have been spoken that may have prevented this accident.

Councelling is going to be available now to the players, but it should have happened along time ago.

Similar situation with Craig MacTavish years ago but he had been drinking. Craig went to jail. Heatley was sober and has no excuses. Should go to prison.

I guess the difference between the soldiers dying and the hockey player....

the soldiers did not have a choice in the matter and did not die as a result of stupidity

Heatley should be the one who died... but he lived and will have to live with what he has done.. he deserves a long prison term and should never be allowed to play in the NHL again

At the very least, Heatly will be facing vehicular manslaughter charges - they'll most likely be dropped to a plea bargain of 2nd degree, therefore its only a misdemeanor. However, he will also face most likely, a wrongful death lawsuit from the family of Dan Snyder. This is what could get ugly - family trying to say how much Snyder could have earned in a lifetime, and Heatly, and probably the Thrashers, having to say that Snyder wasn't that good of a hockey player. This is only going to get ugly in the weeks to come. But I agree with a lot of posts - Heatly was an idiot for driving like that, but as Amber pointed out - all sports have to look at themselves in the mirror and think about the consequences of giving a 20 year old 1 million dollars. What the hell do you think they're going to do? Its no different than these parents buying their spoiled little brats a souped up Mustang or SUV when they're kids turn 18. What do you expect a teenager to do with a fast car - drive 60 km/hr?

Craig MacTavish killed a woman in another vehicle when he drove drunk back in the early eighties as a 25 year old. He initially pleaded not guilty until he realized the evidence against him was too solid. Was sentenced to a year in a minimum security prison. Boston released him while he was in Jail. Edmonton signed him while he was in jail. He eventually was welcomed back to the league won a bunch of Stanley Cups and is now a coach.

Heatley was the MVP of the all-star game. How hard will the league come down on one of its brightest young stars?

Here and there
So many questions have yet to be answered. For instance, blood tests on Healey in regards to alcohol. And if alcohol was a factor, how much of it was supplied at the team function they were attending? And what was their apparent condition when they left? I suspect there is a lot of information that we're unaware of at this time.

What a waste of life. For Dan Snyder to make the NHL on guts, determination and relatively limited talent (he was not drafted) tells you all you need to know about this guy's work ethic...

My guess is that Heatley likely wont go to jail...for whatever reasons athletes seem to get that special treatment when they shouldnt, let my specify, marquee players...you could argue Healtey isnt marquee, yet....

I also think Kobe will get away jail free....

OJ got away didnt he?

Same with Chris Webber, though what he did was not nearly as severe as the three previously stated cases....

If it was Johnny down the street who did this he'd be screwed, but the fact its an athlete or someone in the public eye, the punishment will not be as nearly as punishable as it should be...like someone posted, him going that fast was totally unjustifiable...and its too bad it happens to rising star like Heatley, again like someone posted, this is going to follow him around for the rest of his life...
