The victim Calvin Sawa (sp) 46 of Niagara, who was charged with sexual interference and invitation to touch was murdered on August 19, 2011. The suspect Jeremy Hall, who is currently awaiting trial for the abduction and murder of Billy Mason, is from Hamilton. Both inmates were being held in the segregation area.

Now, if Jeremy Hall commits suicide, it's a two for one deal!

The Hamilton man awaiting trial for murder is now under investigation for a death at the Niagara Region Detention Centre.

Jeremy Hall has been named as a suspect in an incident at the Niagara Detention Centre on Monday that lead to the death of a 46 year old inmate Wednesday.

No charges have been laid as yet.

Hall has been at the Niagara Detention Centre awaiting trial in November into the death of Billy Mason and is due to be transferred back to Hamilton.

Mason was considered a missing person for four years until details of his murder came to light.

He was abducted at gunpoint from his Hamilton apartment, was taken to a remote rural area of Haldimand and was shot to death.

Were they held in the segregation area together???
I was wondering the same thing. If they'd been segregated from each other, this wouldn't have happened. On the other hand, if they were the only two people in the cell, Hall had to know he'd get charged.

What's that thing the wig and robe set say, "Cui bono?"

Ya suppose Hall was trying to score some brownie points with the judge in his other case? His original charge was a really cold first-degree murder, but it sounds like the only evidence is the testimony of his accomplice. Hard to guess why he'd suddenly turn stupid and let himself get caught redhanded this time.

This is a problem when there is no Death Penalty. When you are already in for life without parole, what more can they do to you? At least when a prisoner is on Death Row, they do not have the opportunity to murder other inmates.

I don't think we have life without parole in Canada. TTBOMK, even 1st-degree cases are permitted to apply for parole after 25 years.

no offence but I am still trying to figure out who exactly was in for life without parole as well as in which jurisdiction one would be on death row before trial

One would not be while awaiting trial, but when "D" knows that the most they can get is life what deterrent is there?

Unless you are totally "nuts" even if the prosecution has asked for the death penalty, you hope to get but life and are unlikely to murder yet another person. But when you know the most they can give you even for two murders is two “life” read 25 year, sentences. . .

Figures that the low life do nothing screws can't protect the inmates they are paid good taxpayer's money to protect.

Sounds like you're happy someone got murdered HOF.
How could I be happy when only one of the two is dead? A child sex offender & a double murderer = NHI (No Humans Involved)

Now Rubbie don't get your panties in such a bunch and go completely left-wing with your less than admirable attempt at being a bleeding heart or concerned about the well-being of inmates.

If you are truly interested in saving the taxpayers money, the trimming of fat starts with management, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, legal aid, doctors, dentists, nurses, chaplains, recreational officers, administrative assistants and maintenance workers.

Seriously a majority of Canadians do not have access to the above. In many scenarios both Federally and Provincially, inmates have it better than the working class with low wages, no benefits or formal training. That's a just society.

Here's a thought, build a really large ship and send all inmates on a trip to

Better yet build a really big airplane and you can be the pilot and ATC will give you coordinates to crash in the Andes and the whole lot of you can go cannibalistic on one another.

That is what the media has reported. It is possible due to over-crowding most detention units and prisons are over capacity.

So, are the infamous Mr. Hall or his posse in the skin trade? Any connection to any of the regulars here?

In Canada, twenty-five years is considered life.

The last two people executed in Canada were Ronald Turpin, 29, and Arthur Lucas, 54, convicted for separate murders, at 12:02 am on December 11, 1962 at the Don Jail in Toronto.

Canada banned the death penalty because of fears about wrongful convictions, concerns about the state taking people's lives, and uncertainty about the death penalty's role as a deterrent for crime.

There have been several noteable over-turned convictions since the inception of DNA in Canada.

As of July 2011, the following 34 states have capital punishment statutes:

Alabama
Arizona
Arkansas
California
Colorado
Connecticut
Delaware
Florida
Georgia
Idaho
Indiana
Kansas
Kentucky
Louisiana
Maryland
Mississippi
Missouri
Montana
Nebraska
Nevada
New Hampshire
North Carolina
Ohio
Oklahoma
Oregon
Pennsylvania
South Carolina
South Dakota
Tennessee
Texas
Utah
Virginia
Washington
Wyoming

Also:
United States Government (federal law)
United States Military

Sixteen states and the District of Columbia have abolished the death penalty as of July 2011.
