Need some advice. I upgraded my Windows defragment software to Diskeeper Pro. (The Windows defrag tool is the lite version of diskeeper). The reason why I did this was that my three .pst files (outlook, archive and archivebackup) are fragmented.

I was hoping the Diskeeper Pro would be able to defrag my .pst files. It can't.

Anyone can recommend a defrag tool that can properly defrag these files?

Thanks,

You could back the heavily fragmented files to another media (cd or another hard drive), delete the files, defragment the drive and put the files back.

Side question - I still run FAT32 under XP, so it's no problem to boot up on a disc and still see all the files etc. I use a WIN98 disc for this purpose. If you are running NTFS, is this also true?
You'd have to google for a definitive answer, but I believe that Win98 does not include support for NTFS drives. IIRC, NTFS was introduced to the market through the original MS Server and Win2K products.

In other words, your caution would appear to be warranted, and I'd certainly look long and hard before changing to NTFS if you're using a Win98 disc for a recovery environment.

I'm curious minnie_me, why do you need to defrag those particular files? They aren't regularly used and I don't believe you will notice a performance improvement to either Email or your system in general.

Thanks Anynym.
Well, that is a good question. I'm no techno geek so perhaps I'm looking at this the wrong way.

Anyways, my reason is that after I ran defrag, the report showed that I still had 12% degrafmentation due mainly to those files. i.e. there was fragmentation in or with my .pst files. I then noticed that my OUtlook was not as responsive as it once was so assumed that was because the file was fragmented hence, the processor takes more time to do certain Outlook task such as search, opening email, etc. The report showed close to a 1000 fragments in my main Outlook.pst file.

Thanks for the tips and ideas.

A quick thought and perhaps a question.

Wouldn't the outlook files always show some form of defrag since in that program adding and deleting files is an every hour/day occurrence?

I'm not sure if that would be true but it does seem plausible. The folders containing outlook info are constantly being rewritten.
