I have a dell-520 desktop and its acting up. Maybe someone can help. Called Dell and told me its a software issue and wants 130 plus tax.
Window explorer opens but Firefox will not. Also says to download a win update but fails to do so. Also I have AVGantivirus and won't let me update. Also have Mcafee but is woorking.

Also have a Dell laptop and it won't allow me to open mail or int explorer.

I was using tuneup ultiliiities the other day on both just to let you know.

Thanks

This won't solve all of your issues... but your two antivirus programs are not helping and probably conflicting.

Delete one of them... IMHO delete Mcafee.

Would it be too much trouble to reinstall Windows from the recovery cd?

May need to re-install windows. Would not hurt, try to save your information. Have you windows discs? If does not work, you will need to take to repair shop.

Have you been religiously running your Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy and CCleaner scans at least once a week?

Religiously is right. If it comes to Ad-Aware and Spybot, you might as well pray!

Run MSCONFIG and review the startup programs. Turn off anything that isn't needed and try your luck. Uninstall all antivirus (you shouldn't have 2 running anyway) and try your luck. Then start uninstalling anything you may have added lately and try your luck. Last option is do a OS repair and try your luck. Last option is a total reinstall which will obviously fix your problem but also force you to backup all your personal stuff and reinstall all your applications. Very time consuming but always solves the problem in the end.

How old is that dell-520 desktop?

When I ran Windows heavily I would format the HDD and reinstall Windows once or twice a year to clear all the crap out that accumulates just from running Windows normally. Doing that makes your PC run like it's brand new again.

Install ubuntu Linux. You can install without disturbing your Windows partitiion. Just follow the "wubi" install instructions. Most of your windows only apps can run using WINE. This will take about 15GB of your hard disk space and simply creates a dual boot. It's very safe to try. I have been running it for a while now with no issues. The good thing is you will no longer need to have any anti virus software! If you dont like it you simply delete it.

And guess what, all the issues you noted above will be fixed. I use the "guest" account to do all my browsing cuz after you logout of it all traces of what you did are removed. Kind of like a temp account. I have been a Unix admin for 17 years now and of all Linux I have found this to be the easiest to use so far.

Ubuntu 8.10 - the current stable version, released in October 2008, codenamed Intrepid Ibex.
