Democracy, what exactly does it mean? Is it just "majority rules", or is it more than that? Does it mean an individual is free to do whatever he / she chooses? Is the USA a "democracy"? Is Canada? If the majority says one thing, but an individual wants something else, what are they to do?

Deep thoughts at 0200, with a little help from tequila...

It a little of all of what you said. More importantly, it means we don't go around killing each other when our ways don't get chosen. We protest and debate and manoeuver and lobby and discredit instead.

What it means is the people choosing their government (either through representatives or directly). Free to do what you want is called Liberty.

The USA and Canada are representative Democracies (we elect people to represent us) with the exception of referendums (like California voting to fund Stem Cell Research).

I can't speak for the US, but in Canada we have democracy every 4 years, after that the government goes about it's with or without the majority of approval. We can never forget what Mulroney rammed the GST down our throats by simply adding more his appointed Senators to get final approval.

Then of course, Chretien lied to the public about getting rid of the GST, and when he got in, he kept it in place.

Yep, that's democracy

If you're looking for someone to blame, find a mirror - you get the government you settle for.
