I saw something almost as cool at Rite Aid Pharmacy in the US.

It's a Mastercard that you buy and load up at the counter. You can add anything from $20 to $500 on to it, and re load it at any time, or just buy another one.

A really good way to use a credit card for those 'sensitive' purchases you don't really want a statement for arriving in the mail. Plus, no worries about sites getting your cc info and using it for other purposes.

Morgan,

I really like the credit card idea you mentioned. I'm the kind of guy who holds platinum approved credit in all forms. I've got an 8 star credit rating... but I only use my credit cards and lines of credit to establish and maintain a good credit rating. I am ole fashion when it comes to paying for stuff... I prefer to pay things off (one time), in cash or debit card. I love seeing no interest, I love not having to worry about paying so and so back, and I remain 100% debt free. Man, if they had that card here, I'd sign up for it today.

Run across the border to Detroit and grab one at any Rite Aid. They're right at the front counter, where you'd find phone cards and things like that.

Two of us stood there baffled by them for about five minutes before the clerk explained it to us. She said she uses hers to pay for stuff off of ebay...

They're apparently specifically designed to let you shop on line.

Any Charges for this Service???

As someone who has accumulated more than $10,000 in credit card debt (almost all paid down, thank god!!) the idea of spending only the cash I have is a good one.

But how do these companies make money off it? Is there a signup or monthly fee?

I don't know anything about the card, but Dexit charges $1.50
anytime you top up your monies. ... Not bad.

BTW... Is it possible to grab those cards on the Canadian side of the boarder?.. Do they work here in Canada?...
Is the card actually made by Mastercard?... Perhaps someone onboard knows where to find more info on these cards online?.

It's a Mastercard - Logo et al. I checked the fine print, and it says 'accepted anyplace Mastercard is welcomed', or words to that effect.

Wow, sorry for the tease with this one. Maybe we need someone to make a group run for the border and grab a whole bunch of them....

I checked the Rite Aid site, but they don't seem to offer them via on line sales. Maybe you could call one of the individual stores and see if they'll ship.

Mind you, then you'd have to use your existing credit card to pay for your *new* credit card...

They have a kiosk on my campus. I signed up and used the complimentary $5 on the tag, but haven't refilled it yet. It could come in handy but I can't see myself using it all that much.

That would be even better if say you could put $100s on the card at once. More likely you add $20, 40, $80 at a time and the $1.50s could add up quickly.

Also, how does this differ from debit card where the money comes right out of your bank account?

BTW, Morgan I'd make a run with you anytime. I suspect, however, I'd have a hell of a time keeping (it) up. But sure would be fun to try!!!!

I'll handicap myself by wearing 7" fetish stilletos. Would that make it more fair?

Or just more interesting, at the very least...

Anyways, and but seriously, I am going to Detroit next weekend, and I'll grab one then. I'll post an update on how well it works to pay for the three gazillion dresses I end up buying on line every week...

I for one, think that the $1.50 charge is stupid. Why use Dexit when I can use my debit and credit cards for "free"?

I think the difference is speed and convenience in certain situations. I'd feel quite stupid using my debit card to buy
a coffee and a donut for buck sixty. Ya know, holding up the line while I punch in my pin number and all. I think the Idea of the Dexit card is great for small quick transactions that normally require you to look for or dig up change. ie. Parking, fast food, self serve carwashes, misc. variety store purchases .. etc.
Just touch and go... However, I agree with you when it comes down to using the debit card and such for larger or multiple purchases... Really, I couldn't live without it.

The idea of cashless convenience appeals to some, but do the advantages really outweigh the benefits already offered by debit and credit cards? I
The Dexit card appeals to me, because it's like having a debit card designed mainly for small change type transactions. I hate it when I'm downtown and I've got my debit card in my wallet and no physical cash. Well, sometimes I am forced to go to the ATM to pull out $20 for a very small purchase.

I.e. Tylenol,gum,munchies,bottled water

Well, after is all said and done... The bank has charged me a double fee for taking out that $20. The fee you see on the screen (usually $1.50), and the other you'll find on your bank statement another $1.50). All in All, I'm charged $3.00 for taking $20 of my own money, to buy a small tube of Tylenol.

Note: The bank charge is based on my luck. When I really need it, I can never conveniently find an ATM that matches my debit card.

The Dexit card works to benefit the retailers more, less cash handling speed up the line up, and reduce amount of cash in till which means lower risk. For the customers the only benefit is the disappearance of loose changes after various purchases.

One issue about a cashless society is that every transaction is tracable by the government and loss of privacy. Unforseen event like the blackout last year reveals cashless society is not 100% safe guard.

Nor is it a safeguard against forgetfulness. From what I understand it's not even a swipe card, you just wave it the direction of the terminal or whatever, and the transaction is complete. So . . . you lose the card, someone else has your cash.

And losing the card is oh so easy for a guy who, in the past week, lost or forgot his keys once, lunch bag twice, and lunch -- without the bag --once.

I know, can you say (since I can't spell!!!) Allzehimers??

cashless society == slave society.

think:

auto-taxation -- every cent is accounted for so no cheating

speeding/parking ticket fines debited on the spot, tied to the GPS in the vehicle

EVERY purchase captured and logged in a database somwhere, ripe for mining by some future "homeland security" agency.

No thanks.

How do you pay our lovely ladies in a cashless society? There is always the money trail to your activities, so illegal activities like drugs trafficing, robbery and prosititutions will be erased. But do not forget bartering which exist before money, bartering is already happening now to avoid tax. Cashless society is a very interesting topic and has far reaching impacts on our life.
