Peugeot, Renault and other European car makers abandoned the North American market after the 1973 Federalization laws with regards to upgraded vehicle standards. Hell, even British Leyland and Fiat dropped out. But they are all alive and well across the pond

I know that in the mid 70's that you had to test crash at least one of any vehicle you wanted to import into Canada. Ferrari basically said "we only make 250 of these all year and you think we're going to intentionally demolish one so we can send Canada it's share which comes to about 8 cars?"

In the same vein though during that time my friend's dad owned a Citroen. I think they were amongst the first front wheel drive cars.

The problem with Pugeot is that they don't copy anyone.

Nor does anyone copy them.

As a result, they do everything "different" and as such, no-one really knows how to fix them, or tune them.

Hence, nobody buys Pegeot.

As to Renault, they are the majority Share-holder in Nissan. Nissan's current CEO - Carlos Ghosn is also CEO of Renault. He is widely spoken of to be "the best" Automotive CEO in the world. Ghosn took Nissan from the verge of Bankruptcy to profitability in 2 years. A couple of years ago, they were trying to talk alliance between Nissan and GM at the urging of Kirk Kerkorian who was actively pushing Ghosn to replace the CEO of GM - Wagoner, however nothing ever materialized.

hahaha, ironically the first car I ever sat on and drove was a Peugeot, it was my uncle's and it even had the classical yellow headlights which all Peugeots had (it was the law in France).

It's a very good car and smooth as a baby's ass, it was pulled out of the North American market in the early 1990's for lack of buyers.

I actually owned a Peugeot 604 back in the early 80’s; one of about 100 or so sold in Canada. It was a very comfortable sedan, however, the thing I most remember of it is the repair shop.

This car had non-stop problems with its electrical system. It was either the left light or the right, the front light or the back, the power windows or sun-roof, etc. And each appointment to the shop at that time was a longer wait than that for a medical specialist.

I also remember the trade-in value of this car. After a couple of years of overly frequent visits to the repair shop I was fed up enough to consider dumping it for something more reliable. I went to an American car dealer and was offered a trade-in value of $2,500, a mere 15% of the $16,500 I paid for it brand-new (which was close to that of a Mercedes at the time).

No more Peugeot in North America? I don’t think I’ve missed it.
