Toronto Star to-day

I am looking at getting a new digital camera and am not sure which way to go.

To-day's Toronto Star (November 30th) has a separate Section K devoted to information and reviews on digital cameras. There is some useful info there for anyone who wants to plow their way through it.

Cheers

Olympus - agreed

Olympus or Pentax, FORGET SONY!
Olympus has really nice glass...
...also correct on the zoom issue, optical is better.

Sony can have some quality lens as many can.

I have had 3 Canons, not bad but the more recent ones are very slow between shots and this is very annoying after awhile (2-5 seconds).

I also have a had Sony - very good lens but you are really paying for a name.

My colleague who is a professional photographer for kitchen magazine layouts prefers Olympus. He did tell me to stay away from Pentax however YMMV.

Stay away from low end Pentax digicams, specifically the ones that Factory Direct sells. They are made for Pentax by a third party and Pentax ended up dumping those models at Factory Direct because they don't work very well.

They like Canon and Nikon a bit too much but otherwise a great site!
for good reasons.

I've tried (read: owned) several Casio, Olympus, Pentax, Panasonic, Kodak, Ricoh, Fuji, even HP. None of which I would consider as "decent". The closest thing to decent are various Pentax dSLR. The consitently good ones are always Canon and Nikon. This is coming from someone who uses 4 to 6 different digital cameras each year since 1998.

Which Olympus does he use? I've tried the E-300, E-330, E-500 and compared to even the lowly Canon 30D they are all a big joke. Shutter lag, noisy picture galore. Pentax, especially the K10D is actually better than E-500.

I have the E-500. There is no shutter lag unless you go into extreme fractional seconds. The zoom included 50-150 is awesome. The occasional noise is when the lighting is bad, but I think most cameras would struggle with that.
