Dining Help.. not at "The Y"

I am meeting some friends visiting Toronto on Saturday for dinner/drinks etc. They are staying in the Jarvis/Carleton area someplace. They have asked that I choose the restaurant since they are from out of town (I pointed out that I am too, just "less" out of town!)

Can anyone suggest a casual, decent restaurant in the area? Maybe something with a little jazz or something? We are all in out 40s, not looking to spend a fortune, but we don't want a burger either...

All suggestions are appreciated!

Incidently, I looked at restaurantica.ca, but didn't find it terribly helpful...

Thanks!

For my money, the Globe Bistro at 124 Danforth Ave, just east of Broadview on the north side is an amazing new restaurant. It was Cafe Brussels, but they went under (for some reason).

Went there last week, and I am heading back on Friday.

No jazz, you will need a reservation for SURE, and you'd better move quick.

Food is awesome, ambiance is very modern, very clean.

2 people (one drinking, one not) ran about $110 including tip.

You could also try Xacutti at 503 College Street, very hip, very Toronto, very cool area of town (though in winter, who the fuck cares)

Sort of Indian meets Asian meets French cooking. About the same cost as the Globe.

You'll need reservations as well.

They have individual tables and a communal table which can be fun if you have some hot interesting chick sitting beside you.

Your friends will be impressed with your "Torontoness" despite the fact that you are really a 905'er.

Montreal bisto?

Not sure if it is still there or not - but they had some really sweet jazz there after dinner.

Is The Keg still in the area?
Yeah, but you can eat at any number of Kegs across Canada, there is very little unique or really that great about them.

On King street W. theatre district. Good jazz. Decent food.

For Spanish music, Plaza Flamingo on College street. Latin Salsa dancing on 2nd floor. Food is alright.

Golden Thai sometime with Thai recorded music, not live but intimate setting. Small portion thou.

For a great time, I hear that Zippers is the place to go
Been there.. great piano player, but the meat appeared to be limited to "sausage"!

Great suggestions guys. I got all excited about the Senator as I had heard it had closed. Sorry to have it confirmed. Also the Montreal Bistro appears to be gone too, or am I misunderstanding?

Does Healeys have any decent food? I was at a Terb party there... My recollection is that it was more bar than restaurant...

Can anyone confirm the Montreal Bistro thing? I can't find a website or phone...

In that area....

Keg at the Mansion......its a few cuts above your run of the mill Keg, just for the atmosphere. Bigliardis!! one of the best old school steakhouses in Toronto!!

Wlaking distance for both of those.......

Joe Mamas. On King. Entrees are $20 to $30. Soul music.
Boiler can be pretty busy on weekends.

Not sure if the blonde Greeter @ Mamas is still there, so stuck-up. Turned my LF off.

Last time I was at the Boiler House, the food was medocre at BEST.

I'd give it 1 star out of 4. The Keg is far better than the Boiler House. Maybe they've gotten better, I dunno (I was there about a year ago and never went back.)
