Anybody have any experience with this place?

http://www.directbuy.com/

I must say I had a bad one a couple of days ago and I didn't even sign up. I decided to check it out to see about all these savings they talk about. Went online, filled out their info page and a rep called me back to book an appointment. I show up, they sit me down and show me some hackneyed video and then they sit me down to talk...now here comes the HARD sell!! I feel like they are trying to sell me a time share lol...its like $4500.00 for a 3yr membership (thats what you have to buy) and you have to make a decision TODAY

I stop the Salesperson and tell him that I was never told that a decision had to be made that day, and if I knew I wouldnt be here wasting his time. Who makes a same day $4,500.00 commitment for something you arent even sure exactly what you are getting?...because they wouldnt show me their catalog. The rep who called me to set up an appointment could have at least told me of this (pretty low tactic just to get me in the door IMHO).

We bantered back and forth, he tried to use some cheesey sales tactic on me and I just got up and left.

Two of my friends signed up and regretted deeply that they did. You have very little selection on what you buy, if you can find it through them. A total waste of money and a truly great rip-off.

As Fredrik at ING says, "Save your money." Any high pressure Today-or-never outfit doesn't even deserve to lick any of our boots, except after a romp in the pig sty.

here and there
I did some research into Direct Buy. Seems to me that when they try to apply the pressure to join, it's questionable. If the product/service is so good, they shouldn't need to apply pressure. Reminds me of Timeshare sales tactics.

Secondly, I did some online research into a variety of dicussion forums. The vast majority of these were not exactly favorable, most members were extremely disapointed with the service and quality, it was not what was sold to them. I seem to recall the cost to join was in the thousands as well.

Well, I was going to check them out since I'm kind of in the biz that they're flogging. That was until I saw their commercial and I think it was the bathroom example where the couple stated that they saved 8 grand on a 11 grand bath reno. The second I saw that I called BULLSHIT. There is NO way you can do a reno quoted at 11 grand for 3. Well, you could, if the labour and most of the materials were free.

I am a memeber and have been for 10 years. Yes the sales pitch and the pressure on you to sign right there is b.s... but I did some research a head of time and walk in with about 10 things to price out( my wife and I both own businesses) and figured out the savings. They told me I couldn't look at the catalogues until I signed, I show them a cheque for the full amount only if I could look at the catalogues. Figured it would take a year and a half to pay of the membership with those 10 items and it is not that much to remain a member.( actual I told the sales person to bugger off until I figured it out) now we save about 2-3 grand a year on business stuff.

couple of things to remember. You have to go to the store to order, have to pay in cash, debet , you have to pick up at their location(or you can have it deliever at a cost but you want to make sure it is the right thing because once you take it you own it any problems you deal with the manufactor) and you are not allowed to buy things for resale>

So we have one poster (Paul B) saying it is good if you're a contractor, and another (iprint) who says you can't resell the items. Just goes to show you the quality of advice you can get on here lol. I mean, no contractor in his right mind will GIVE a customer those custom kitchen cabinets...oh wait, I guess they do in order to get the pricing that they advertise on the commercials lol.....

But that's the Mike Holmes way of renovating: get someone else to cover the costs......

They Have contractors you can hire to do the job and more then likely they are the same people the manufactor uses, they don't want any bs either. We have had hard wood floors, carpet, cupboards... Our experience has been that if you buy the same product over and over again the manufactor wants to know that you are not re-saling not direct buy they don't give a shit. The manufactor doesn't want to piss off other retailers. Also some of the manufactor don't give you the choice of their most currant products but not all.

For example bought a high end Nixon digital slr with lens and save over $350.00 over Henry's best sale price on the same package.

I went to one of their "meetings" and experienced the same hardsell.

I told them they could keep their catalogues as there would no way for me to invest money if I couldn't see what I "may" be buying. The sales rep said it was all about trust and that there were hundreds of others that had already signed up. I asked him to give me the contact numbers for the 5 clients who had apparently signed up with him that week and if I didn't find a happy customer he would then sign over the ownership for his '04 BMW to me. Suddenly it wasn't about trust anymore but me trying to be fresh..
