Where in XP can you see what direct X you have???

I believe Msconfig
or go to system/hardware/device manager
scroll to video adapter and check the info there.

2. In the Run dialog box, type dxdiag

3. Click OK.

A dialog box displays the version that you are running.

I have heard that XP will work better if I uninstall DirectX... How can I do this?

You can't, at least not without damaging Windows.
