Here's the deal...

until Jan 31,2008 you need a passport to fly into the US and photo ID (Drivers licence) to drive or go by water. After this date you still need a passport to fly and to drive or go by water either
a government issued photo ID ie drivers licence :AND
a birth certificate or citizenship or a valid passport.. So my recommendation is get a passport...

No, because international borders don't count when you travel by sea. You can go anywhere in the world by boat and not need a passport.

That would depend on the port of calls. If you disembark at the destinations then they may require a passport. Better to have one just in case.

Having been on a dozen or so cruises over the last 20 years. The simple answer is yes. Regardless of whether you are departing from a U.S. port or European it is recommended that you carry a passport as you will be entering various countries on your travels.

You did not say where you were leaving from or what ports you will be hitting so I will assume a departure port of Miami or Lauderdale and ports like the Bahamas, Cozumel St. Thomas and a private island or Grand Cayman.

St. Thomas is a U.S. possession so if you have gone from the Bahamas to St Thomas you have left the U.S. then are returning after visiting the Bahamas, or Cozumel in Mexico or Grand Cayman are all independant countries. The ship in most cases takes on immigration officials from the various countries as they arrive in a port. They then review the ships manifest and may call individuals to be "inspected" prior to clearing the ship for disembarkation. If this is you that is picked it is much easier a process if you have a passport. As the number of Canadians onboard most ships is usually fairly small then it is not out of the ordinary to have them checked.

Bottom line is take a passport it will make all official checks much easier and faster.

I have herd but do not believe that you will even need a passport if you fly over the USA air space even if your arrival and departure is out side the USA. If you are flying out of or into the USA you will need a passport 100%

YES

After 20 cruises I can say that they won't let you on the ship without one. Since the ship will be going to other ports you are effectively preclearing each of those entry points as you join the ship.

Anytime you fly, take your passport. Anytime you travel to other countries, take your passport. Travelling without one causes headaches and as of next year you WILL require a passport when you drive across the US border from here or travel from the US to other countries and return.

Failure to do so will leave you stranded.

Don't leave Canada without your Passport period.
There are still some countries that do not “require” you to have a passport.

The travel agent or cruise company usually clearly states if it is required at your destinations.

Then go visit them without a passport and try coming back to canada without being grilled to the 7th degree.
Only fools travel outside of Canada without a passport these days.
Very true!

Also make sure you bring a photocopy of your passport in case you lose it.
Very important!

And dont bring your expired passport by mistake, I did that once and it nearly ruined my trip
