Can someone confirm if this is correct?

Imagine if you wanted to drive down to Panama city Beach in FL, or New Orleans for Mardi Gras. I always thought our Ontario DL would be sufficient right?

But there is a State we might drive thru it's called Kentucky. It requires you to have to have an International Driver Permit, on top of our Ontario DL.

Am I reading this correct? Does anyone know?

Thanks.

This is a good discussion.

And the situation that started the concerns.

My understanding is that you will need a passport to cross the border, but an Ontario license is valid even in Kentucky. However, if you stay in the state (or any state) for more than a year, you will need to get their license.

Yes, that makes sense. States get revenue from auto registration, so if you are there a year, you are probably supposed to get a state license plate and pay the auto plate tax.

I know 2 people who were pulled over in the US.
Both were told that the license plate protective cover was illegal. Neither were fined just given a warning.
The reason was it covers the entire plate and the police can't tell if the plate is real or fake when part of it is cover.

I read a report that it is illegal here to. But since Canadian Tire is making money of them, and the license plate peel off. We are good to go for awhile.

Might want to increase insurance coverage. From https://driving.ca/features/insurance/car-insurance-travel-out-of-province-or-us

Though purchasing extra car insurance isn’t necessary for travel across Canada and the U.S., you may have gaps in coverage that can expose you to dire financial risks.

First, you should consider increasing your third-party liability insurance. While each province requires drivers to carry a minimum level of coverage, the threshold is usually low. For example, in Ontario, the minimum amount required by law is $200,000. This could prove insufficient if you’re involved in a collision in the U.S., where insurance payouts are typically higher. If the court decides you’re responsible and issues a judgment against you for $500,000, and your car insurance will cover only $200,000, you’ll be on the hook for the remaining $300,000. For this reason, most insurance providers recommend obtaining third-party liability coverage between $1 million and $2 million.

Second, determine if adding family protection coverage to your policy is worthwhile. This optional coverage (or endorsement) protects you and eligible family members from underinsured or uninsured drivers. It’s especially beneficial if you’re planning to visit somewhere like New Hampshire, where drivers aren’t required to have car insurance.

For example, let’s say you sustain severe injuries in an accident for which the other driver is found responsible. However, their maximum liability coverage isn’t enough to cover your medical bills. In that scenario, your family protection coverage would kick in to cover the shortfall (up to the specified limit in your policy).

Some provinces, like Ontario and B.C., mandate a minimum level of compensation for drivers who incur injuries or damages from underinsured or uninsured drivers. So, your existing car insurance policy may already offer the protection you need. Still, the maximum coverage you’re eligible for may prove inadequate in some cases, so consider adding the family protection endorsement to your policy to enhance your
