From my experience, cable is more consistant as long as they are not overselling the area (too many connections for the bandwidth provided). The more users online with cable, the slower is it.

DSL on the other hand is directly related to the distance from the switch substation. If your close, your going to be good.

I've used Rogers for 10+ years now and no issues.

You can buy different speeds of both cable and DSL. The question of which is faster is somewhat moot except that there is a physical limit of cable based on the number of users that are sharing the pipe. By the same token, there is a physical restriction of speed of DSL based on your distance from the CO. In order to make a honest decision, you would need to know how many other cable subscribers are in your area and how far away you are from the CO.

As far as which is "better". How can you quantify that? Is better speed only? Or is is uptime? Or is it the ancillary stuff like caps, additional billings etc.

I work in IT and I always ask someone how fast do you really need? If you are browsing do you really need 10mbit or more? What are you going to use it for?

With DSL more crisp pic, and hundreds of channels from world wide
whereas cable is pain in the ass, slow and pic is that good like DSL
Any day DSL is a better choice!

where the hell can you get FIOS?

a house I once (2000) bought in a new subdivision in Maple (Vaughan) had FIOS ready cable through the entire town... only problem, it never ever got connected to anything and I think the company that installed it went belly-up around 2002 or so.

when I'm in Seattle, the hotel I stay at is on a FIOS system and the speed is rediculous.

So if you're in a condo DSL is better if everyone else is using cable?

They are s-l-o-w-l-y putting FIOS in parts of Buffalo and a couple WNY suburbs.
Speeds are fantastic over 10 times faster than cable.

I had cable for about 4 years and had no trouble what-so-ever... Then we moved to a new neighbourhood and we still stayed with the cable co (DSL wasn't available at the time anyway.) Then about 3 months after we moved I started getting service interruptions. I called the cable co- then BS'ed me around for a couple days, then it came back on its own. A month later- same thing happened, this time no service for 4 days... 2 months later- SAME THING AGAIN! The Techie in each instance tried to blame it on my computer (they always do that first) until I explained to him I probably knew more about this stuff than he did, and it is NOT my system! He "accelerated the ticket" to a higher level technical guy... (which is basically cable speak for we really have no F#%*ing clue why its not working!). Anyway 4-5 days later- it miraculously started working again. About a month later DSL was finally available in my neighbourhood so I cancelled Rogers and signed up with Bell. Aside from the occassional service interuption for a couple hours, here or there, it has been running smoothly for the passed 7 years...
