What a sad story. (Dubai ain't no paradise) Any country with sharia laws is a no for me. A rape cannot be convicted without four adult Muslim male witnesses. She was charged with having illicit sex outside marriage, and thrown in a filthy jail cell for eight months.

A kiss on the "cheek" holding hands can get you in to jail. I even heard a story of a Russian-woman paying a fine of $200 for "drinking juice in public"

Foreign construction workers were even treated like rats.

Outrageous and terrible. I don't really have words to describe how it makes me feel other than sick to my stomach.

Typical silly statement from a person who has no brains.

Just as shocked as I am from the UAE authorities, I'm actually more shocked at Starwood Hotel Chains respond.

After all, it's a western company and isn't the west supposed to be the best?
Silly statement?
Please try to explain this behaviour and pin it on a reason OTHER than the fact that it occurred in a state that is run by backwards, barbaric, disgusting, hypocritical, primitive arabs...... I'm waiting.

I think you're an idiot if you're a woman who wants to go to Dubai. I don't care for what purpose, you're an idiot.

This woman is a plain old victim. Its shameful and awful what happened to her and in terms of the actual event, not her fault at all. But I do get your point about the fairer sex having to be much more thoughtful than men, when it comes to decisions about what circumstances to put themselves in, in the first place. Like living in Dubai. And, the lack of local knowledge and the assumption that foreign justice systems are as rational as the Australian justice system, was a follow-on mistake. But to say any more will lead to the whole slut walk discussion. Ugh.

I know a girl who lived in Dubai for a few years; also a voluptious blonde, much like this Australian. I understand that she was in a sugar baby/daddy relationship. Came back happy as a pig in shit. Just saying.

How does explaining that excuse your statement, which was *not* to the effect of "the people that run the country are backwards, barbaric, disgusting and hypocritical". Instead you made a slam against every single person born into the arab race.

The United States is run primarily by Christians. If the government of the United States did something disagreeable (and there's plenty of examples of this to choose from) would you respond "dirty, filthy Christians", or would you perhaps think about it with a bit more nuance than with sweeping cultural/racial slurs?

^^ tar503 I think it is the application of Sharia law that make this a religiously-charged story. The "Christians" who "run" the United States (I take issue with both assertions, btw), function within in a secular framework. Thus their mis-steps do not have a religious slant to them.

'Excuse my statement'??? Why the hell does my statement need to be 'excused'?
The situation stands on it's merits: A woman was in an arab state, governed by arab 'laws', was raped, and was punished for having extra-marital sex... please, again, I beg you... explain this away...

Most of the "liberal" Arab gulf states (Bahrain, Qatar, Abu Dhabi) are not at all liberal, it is a facade which as soon as there is the slightest hiccup disappears faster than lightning.

I guess that will either teach her not to get raped next time.. or not to report it
She can't help the 'getting raped" bit, but to be honest, as a resident of Dubai, she should have known not to report it. That onus was on her. As abhorrent as that may seem to us, as disgusted as we may be by her treatment by the courts, she should not have reported it. To live in a country where getting raped is a crime, and not know that getting raped is a crime, was her mistake. I am LOATH to beat up on this poor woman who was first raped, then abused by her host nation, but the onus was on her to know about the (backwards) laws of her chosen home.

You're right. It's not a 'silly' statement. It's flat out racist.

Which assertions did you take issue with exactly?

I was really just trying to make a point that all the people of a given race or religion can't be held accountable for the ways in which power is wielded in one particular country or area of the world. Islam != Arab and Arab != Islam. Sharia law is an Islamic concept, one that that not all Islamic countries have implemented. Arabs are a race of people and not all Arabs are muslim, and of the ones who are muslim not all agree with this rather extreme interpretation of their religion.

Yes, you have a point about the United States not being run within a religious framework, but I think my point is still valid nonetheless.

As you describe it here, yes I agree with you.

Because I felt your statement was racist. Perhaps I misinterpreted it though because the language was harsh and carried some very historically racial tones (i.e. "barbarians, dirty, filthy").

Maybe you just mean the government in power? Maybe you didn't actually mean all Arabs, and you don't actually hate Arabs in general? I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and if that's true, I do apologize.

However, you might want to be more careful with your language in the future. It might be well and good on the internet to talk like that, but walking around talking about dirty, filthy _____ (insert race of your choosing here) in public might get you in some hot water.
