A Dutch politician facing trial for his anti-Islamic comments has been refused entry into Britain, where he was planning to show a controversial film.

Geert Wilders said he was planning to show his 15-minute movie Fitna, which juxtaposes shots of the 9/11 attacks on the US with quotations from the Quran, at the House of Lords after he was invited by a member.

But the British embassy wrote to Wilders on Tuesday to say he would not be allowed into the country, saying he posed a "genuine, present and sufficiently serious threat to one of the fundamental interests of society".

"Your statements about Muslims and their beliefs, as expressed in your film Fitna and elsewhere, would threaten community harmony and therefore public security," the letter said.

Wilders is the leader of the Dutch Freedom Party (PVV).

'Cowardly'

Wilders has called the decision "cowardly", and said he still planned to enter the UK, vowing to board a flight to London on Thursday.

"This is something you expect in Saudi Arabia but not in Britain. I think this cowardly position of Britain is very bad," he said.

Lord Pearson, who invited Wilders to show Fitna at the House of Lords, said he was "very surprised" at the news.

Maxime Verhagen, the Netherlands' foreign minister, said his government would press Britain to reverse its decision.

Fitna is an Arabic word which has numerous meanings including "sedition" and "temptation", and appears in the Quran. In the film Wilders urges Muslims to tear out "hate-filled" passages from the text.

Its screening prompted protests in Pakistan, Iran, Indonesia and Afghanistan, while Ban Ki-moon, the United Nations secretary-general, described the film as "offensively anti-Islamic".

Wilders also sparked outrage over other anti-Islamic comments, including calling for a ban on the Quran and comparing Islam to Nazism.

Last month a court in Amsterdam ruled that he must stand trial for hate speech.

We shall see but Mr. Wilders says that he is planning fly to Great Britain and says the he will see if the authorities decide to arrest a sitting member of a foreign legislature.

Also interesting to see how his movie is "hate speech" when all the speaking is done by Moslems.

Wow. And after everything I read in this forum, I was under the impression that Iran is such a free and open society...

I find it ironic that a guy who wants to ban the Koran is himself being banned.

Would Britain refuse entry to Ahmedenijad? You can argue his speeches have constituted hatred towards Israel and people of Jewish faith.

The UK is opening a big can of worms here by refusing entry.

There is also a large muslim population in the Netherlands but Dutch politicians are not as 'politically correct' as their British counterparts.

The Dutch have a reputation for being 'tolerant' but not to those who would try to subvert their society and show 'intolerance' to Dutch values and freedom of speech, as some muslim extremists have tried to do in the Netherlands in the recent past.

Correct.

The Dutch have it right. They don't have an "Immigration Ministry, they have an Immagration and Assimilation Ministry".

It's interesting that England refused him entry. If England had an immigration policy similar to the Netherlands they wouldn't be in the mess they are in.

True, but this thread is about the Dutch.

It's not always about the Danes, danmand.
Negative, this thread is about the british yielding to the pressures of the muslims.

It’s not him that presents a “genuine, present and sufficiently serious threat to one of the fundamental interests of society". It’s the very group of people he’s trying to expose.

Banning Wilders is free publicity for his film “Fitna” and it also is yet another thing that makes the Muslim community look like hysterical, intolerant malcontents that can’t take criticism.

This is another case of sacrificing freedom of speech for political correctness. The Brits and particular the labour party are the most craven people these days.

Geert Wilders is a member of parliament and has a significant and growing following. The main reason that he’s so popular is most people feel that someone needs to take a stand.

Here’s what my bro Pat Connel had to say about it:
