Does anyone have a DVD burner... are there any benefits to a DVD burner over a CD burner???
Here are a few points:
- DVD burners are in the $400-550 range depending on what speed you want and compatibility with different media.
- There isn't a set standard yet (DVD-R/R-W, DVD+R/R-W and the upcoming Blu-Laser holding 23GB).
- DVD-R (DVD5) discs hold only 4.7GB (actually 4.3GB) while factory pressed movies are dual layered DVD9 discs.
- Not all DVD players can read DVD-R discs and those that can may be picky about certain brands of media (CD-Rs had this problem when they first were available).
- You'll need an NTFS formatted harddrive which isn't a big deal though it won't perform as well as the less secure FAT32 formatted.
Now backing up random data really isn't worth it because there's no set standard still and Blu-Laser is in the works. CD-Rs are still the best for this. If you're going to pirate movies then think of this: Because movies won't fit on a DVD-R you'll have to downsample and recompress the video and audio and remove a lot of extras (taking a few hours), but doing so you're not getting the same quality as a DVD anymore even if it's a small difference. If you spend $450 on the burner and the average DVD costs $25, you'll need to burn at least 19 movies to break even (including total costs of DVD-R media). Or you can just download DVD-R releases online if you can find them (they're certainly not on Kazaa) and have the uncapped bandwidth to do so.
If you're going to pirate console video games then that would make more financial sense. Only a handful of games are on DVD9 discs so you can copy 99% of what's out there and the break even point is much lower: $450 for the burner with the average game being $80 and that's only 6 games you need to copy. Of course you'll need to mod your console and be an avid gamer to make it worthwhile.
