maybe because more dvd players are compatible with - than with + .
The cost is still upt here, brand name singles can be bought for $0.30, while DL are still about $4 each,s o I tend to split any larger movies onto 2 discs
But as for costs futureshop has been the cheapest place they had a sale a few months ago where the disks cost about 2 and change per disk. The price of DL's have come down quite a bit not too hard to find them for $3 per disk but I usually stock up when they are on sale.
My Pioneer stand alone recorders, ( not computer dvd rw ) are minus only, my computer Pioneer dvd rw is plus and/or minus single or dual layer, I stick with minus disc only since most home dvd players are minus compatible rather than plus compatible

I just asked because all of the recorders that I have seen are only DVD+DL
Are there now DVD+/-DL now?
DL's still cost too much for me... will wait longer for the price of the media to come down
There's a quick-reference of compatibility (with some 7000 players catalogued) at ... http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php
Note that there are some inconsistencies within the list (perhaps because of confusion over which parts were used, and what their particular capabilities are).
