A few Toshibas don't officially support DVD+R or +R/W, but it does work ok on some models. Other Toshibas will lock up on +R, but work great on -R and -R/W.

It seems really wierd because I'm sure it's not possible to buy a DVD drive that won't support +/-

Edifice, would you do "refurbished"?...

as XSCargo has a couple of cool machines from RCA. This one (like your Toshiba) does upconverting , comes with the HDMI cable if you have or will be getting HDTV and seems OK with +R/-R. Here is the link.

Other machine cannot do upconverting but can copy to VHS or DVD and even archive your VHS onto DVD. But it wants +R/+RW only. URL is http://www.shopxscargo.com/product_...ode=23563&sub_category_1_id=30&category=Video

If you want a little protection, both have the option to purchase a 2 year product replacement plan.

I got a VCR/DVD recorder from futureshop about 6 months ago from LiteON but its not on the website anymore, shame as its been an excellent machine.
