In the spirit of escalators here's a question on elevators.
Door opens and you get in. There's already one person in. Plenty of space but the person is standing right next to the buttons.
Do you ask the person to press the button for your floor or do you walk over to where the person is standing and press it yourself?
Qualifier: The person is not attractive to you so there is no reason for you to want to get close.

I press my own button if they don’t offer. If they do I I’ll let them press it for me

I would just ask so I’m not stepping in their way. If they don’t then I would just say excuse me and push it myself.

Normally when I am the person already in the elevator, I ask the person what floor and push for them.

In my residential building, most people are polite neighbours and ask which floor. If they don't, I muster up all my stamina and actually do it myself.

In any other circumstance, I'll just do it myself, if the panel is accessible.

No, be assertive and simply call out your floor number, of course adding "Please". Who is going to ignore that simple request if they're standing in front of the buttons? btw, I don't live in Toronto any more so maybe I'm living in dreamland.

Many years ago I was shocked and dismayed when a woman in her late 50's admonished me for asking.
Since that incident I never ask. Always just walk over and press it myself. What baffles me is those who don't offer to press yet don't get out of the way.

Not as bad as those who feverishly press the close button as you're racing towards the closing doors I suppose. Embarrassing for them though is when the doors close fully then a second later opens up again.

If I'm first in an elevator I'll offer to press for everyone. If I'm in the elevator and the doors open to pick up passengers I'll move away from the buttons to allow them the space.

I never knew this before I moved into my building, but I've since learned that "4" is an unlucky number in Asia and we have a moderate number of Asians in the building. As such, there is no floor numbered 4 and no button that says 4.

I've only done it a few times over the years, but when I feel like being a wiseguy, if someone asks me which floor I say 4 and watch them look everywhere. They usually figure it out after about 3 seconds and we both get a good laugh. No none has got pissed at me yet.

I don’t get those kinds of people either. Why can’t you share an elevator??? Why can’t you offer to push a button or simply stand away from them???

I was up and down elevators all the time while touring. Was a great way to say hi to people. But I’m just friendly that way. Thankfully most people at hotels are traveling and usually in good spirits so they respond kindly.

That is funny.

I actually overheard a couple looking at my old condo building and refusing it because it not only had a 4th floor but that was the amenity floor, where the gym and all that stuff was. They were an Asian couple.

I don’t know anywhere that as a 13th floor. The number 13 in a unit number like apartment 513 is also not used.

I wonder if in Asian area a Condo has 4 and 13 missing floors.
