EU Expands

The European Union expanded tonight, welcoming 10 new countries. In addition to adding a greater population of people using the Euro, the free flow of people along with goods & services grows to cover more land mass than ever. In a time when others (GW Bush et al) practice isolationism and the closing of borders, this is a heartening attitude to see. Well done to our European friends!

One of the fathers of European reunification, Helmut Kohl, spoke through tears when he addressed thousands at a ceremony in the German town of Zittau, which borders both Poland the Czech Republic.



"The message is there will never again be war in Europe," the former German chancellor said.

In Brussels, the headquarters of the EU, an announcer told a ceremony at the city hall: "We are all Europeans now."

In France, Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin called on people to "open [their] hearts to this new Europe".

Marek Wos, a 40-year-old Polish businessman attending the celebrations in Warsaw, said it was a good day for his country.

"We will no longer be second-class people from a second-class country," he said.

"We are equal now."
