The Tsunami is by far the event of the year. It may be fresh in our memories, but more than 100,000 dead (116,000 at last count) from a "natural" disaster may turn out to be the story of the decade by the time we're through counting the bodies.

On a brighter side: ARGOS! Hey we don't have hockey. We need something to cheer about.

The total number of dead will likely be far higher than 100000.
I think all other events this year pale in comparison and siginficance.

When is the last time that more than 100000 people were wiped off the face of the earth so quickly?

I would make the Ukraine election the number 2 event.. for the number of people that were directly affected and participated in it.

I read in a blog (I think it was there) that 138,000 perished in a Banglidesh tidal wave in 1991.

Btw I heard the count is at 125,000 and climbing. I wouldn't be surprised if it reaches 200,000.

It's been good to know ya
Even once it is all said and done and everything is all cleaned up I do not believe the numbers will be so accurate as there is mass burnings and mass burials. I think the saddest part is one picture I seen was of a young child holding a sign looking for his lost parent and two brothers. That poor child visiting as a tourist and all alone in such devestation. It really made me think why has somebody not picked up this child and returned him home to other relatives and how could they take such a picture? To think that they took that picture and that child is still in a country in the midst of all this. I feel sorry for all the children that can be lost there right now with no relatives, but this one child has relatives elsewhere. Is this a case of priorities first? ie.. getting rid of the dead first and leaving the tourists to get out themselves if they wish.
