In the market for one.

Looking for your input, experience, suggestions on one that is extremely reliable, quiet, has a fast access time, 500GB-1TB size, under $300 and will not crash & burn from overheat after a few months.

Get either a Seagate or Western Digital drive in that order.
Those are the two best.

I got one of these for about $35. You just plug in a hard drive and you're good to go. http://www.vantecusa.com/front/product/view_detail/295

That's a cool little product!

Some questions about it tho:

1)Is dust buildup on the drive a concern because from the pictures on their website it appears the drive doesn't slide all the way into the dock but sticks out half exposed.

2)Is there a cooling mechanism built into the dock and how noisy is the system?

3)Is it compatible with any size/make of HDD out there or are there some limitations?

4)What kind of storage case would you need to use to keep the multiple hard drives you swap in and out from getting damaged when you don't use them?

There's no cooling mechanism in the dock. The fact that the hard drive sticks half-way out does the trick.

I suppose there could be some dust build-up over time. It surely couldn't be any worse than the inside of my computer case and it should be easier to clean. I'll just have to pop the drive out and blow out the dust.

You'll see from the product description that the dock takes SATA I/II, 2.5"/3.5", and size up to 1TB. I've used both Seagate and WD in mine.

As far as storing the HD, I just pop it into the static proof bag that the drive came in and stick it in a desk drawer but maybe I'll go to the local dollar store and get a piece of tupperware for the purpose.

The Hammer!!
Stay away from Seagate, had some bads ones and lost alot of data, gonna cost me a G to get the info off.

Western Digital is you best bet. The 1tb-2tb's ARE known to over heat. do not exceed 500gig until they work their problems out.

I believe Seagate is bulkier because it has a built in gel cooling pad to keep the heat level down on the drive. From my 12+ years experience working on PCs, I recommend the seagate first , then western digital. Of all the hard drives that died on me in the PCs I worked on, 80% of those drives were maxtor.

I used to prefer the WD because if the drive crashes, their office is in Markham, Ontario and the local stores I dealt with there gave me a replacement drive within 24 Hours. However, the seagate nowadays is better because of the gel pad and the 5 year full warranty on the drive.

I second this. Based on my personal experience Seagate has come up on the top. WD used to be really good but it's not what it used to be. At the end of the day all HD's will fail, it only a matter of when.
