I remember bumping into a guy at Canadian Tire a few years back and he said that brita water filters and others like it, weren't good at all.
He said the best would be one built into your faucet/sink area.
Are there any other viable quick options?

and what was this guy's area of expertise?

Both are activated charcoal filters and will work the same. If you do not change them frequently they will actually make your water worse. Better (but more expensive) would be a built in reverse osmosis membrane system. Still have to change a membrane but it's a matter of years, not months.
Nothing wrong with regular water, aside from the overpowering chlorine taste. Both will remove the chlorine, R.O. will remove more impurities the charcoal.

I have not changed my Brita water filter for three years now. I assumed that when it wouldn't filter anymore, then that was when I should change it. The water tastes perfectly fine. Am I in danger of getting sick?

stinky the simple answer is yes. The bacteria and other contaminates that the filter takes out stay in the filter and continue to flourish especially if it is kept for long periods of time and continually add to the filter.

Although they are affected by many conditions, the life of the filters vary widely and the instructions for the changing of them are usually a safe period in which the manufacturer has determined they will work some what efficiently, it is best to follow the instructions for time frames.

I have worked for a person who developed a system that although very effective is somewhat costly to maintain and market, as distantvoyeur pointed out the reverse osmosis systems are very good choice for the average consumer. Also remember that the majority of people are on municiple water supplies and they are already treated and safe enough for the major bottlers of "Spring Water" to use.

He installed under the sink faucet filters.

Canada has the second cleanest municipal drinking water on earth, second only to Finland (and the difference is barely measurable - a couple ppb). Unless you have an allergy, or really really hate the taste of your local water, there is no reason whatsoever to filter the tap water you drink.

VIP near you....
Has anyone tried the new PUR filter?

It actually has a button to add a flavour to the water at the same time as you fill the glass. I hope it comes in cherry :D

Actually, I have found over the past couple of years tap water gives me major heartburn if I have more than say, half a glass. I have also noticed that the chlorine smell has gotten stronger (I don't know if they are actually adding MORE chlorine or not).

I have been meaning to pick up a brita just never remember when I'm in the store because whenever I'm at someone's house who has one, I don't get any reaction to tap water once it's put through the brita.

Also, yeah, CHANGE the damn filter. IF you don't believe us, open one up and see the crap that's in it.....

Yeah if you don't change the filter it's worse. The filter "fills up" with crap, and at some point not only does it NOT remove crap from the water any more, it adds back in the crap that was previously removed, so you wind up getting a higher dose than if you had no filter.

For drinking water a reasonable strategy is to put it in a glass jug in the sun. The sun will burn off a lot of nasty shit, like, the chlorine will evaporate, without having it run through a filter.

If you change the filters often though like you should it's all good.

Anyone know a good cheap water tester? The bigger danger is that the pipes into your building or in your home are actually crap pipes that are contaminating your water.

There is no cheap water tester, you have to first figure what you want to test for....

To avoid crap pipes, run your taps to flush the crappy water from the line with slightly less crappy water from the main. ;)

I installed the RainSoft system (okay technically I hired someone to install if for me :) ) and we love it. Only need to use a fraction of the usual amounts of soap to get great results. Water tastes great (better than bottled water IMO).

Went on a business trip to Winnipeg for two weeks and couldn't wait to get back to my filtered water.

Just my two cents worth.

The water coming out of your tap in urban Ontario is absolutely fine to drink. Read the Health Canada reports. If you feel that you really need to filter your water go ahead, it's a free country but you're wasting your money. If you smoke but still feel the need to filter your tap water you are a total moron.

Tap water may be fine to drink, but it has a weird taste. You can even tell if you make ice cubes out of tap water. They ruin the drink.

Filtering the water for health reasons is not necessary. The only reason to filter would be to remove the chlorine taste. Cheapest way, leave it out and it will burn off slowly. Filter it using activated carbon filter (Brita, PuR, etc) is next cheapest.
I personally can't stand the taste of high chlorine water so use both methods. Depending on time.
