Firefox has been taking a bruising in the browser wars at the hands of Chrome. Mozilla's watched Google's browser gain hordes of new adopters while its own market share sits dead in the water. Finally sick of watching Google get all the glory, Mozilla's instituted a fast-release schedule to get Firefox floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee again, and the first fruits of their labor are finally hitting the streets. Less than three months after Firefox 4 launched, Firefox 5 is now available for download.

If you're expecting major changes along the lines of Firefox 4's "Tabs On Top," you're going to be disappointed. Enhanced support for HTML5 and CSS animations are two of the biggest changes; Canvas, the 2D graphics application, has also been upgraded and several Android-specific enhancements were made, along with the usual collection of tweaks and bug fixes.

Mozilla plans on releasing a new iteration of Firefox every six weeks as part of its fast-track schedule, so we should be seeing Firefox 6 sometime around the beginning of August. Mozilla hopes that the rapid changes will let new features be added soon after they're completed, rather than forcing developers to wait several months for a new build

I love Google Chrome, but still keep the other browsers handy on my computer
FF is rarely used now. Chrome automatically updates your browser as updates become available, so you never need to think about it.

FF require you to manually DL each version, and now that the release cycle is every six weeks, thats a lot of downloading

Leave good enough alone I say.

OTOH firefox is vastly improved from the first edition when you had to think in Russian to use it. Or at least the weapon systems.

Rarely use FF anymore.
Don't understand why Mozilla took so long to upgrade FF?

the only problem being how to implement a url from the address bar.
I very seldom put an url into the address bar because if you are off one keystroke/character or space it won't work. Prefer to use the 'Search with Google' or whatever, that is in the search box just to the right of the address bar.

I do copy the url already in address bar all the time, by simply double clicking it to highlight the entire url, then send or paste it to wherever needed.

WP - thanks for your help on this one.
Going to Google in Opera is exactly what I've been doing - same as you, because that seems to be the only way to do it there. But maybe I didn't make myself clear. In aol, (run on top of IE8), once I have the url in the address bar and then want to bring up the corresponding web page, all I need to do is click on "Go". In Opera, near as I can tell, there is no corresponding "go" box or any other way to bring up a given web site directly from the address bar.
BTW, I almost never have a problem with "url into the address bar", but then most of the time I've gotten there thru copy/paste.

I'm not that familiar with IE and practically never use it anymore.

Opera does store recent urls in a couple places in the address bar panel as drop-downs. Some can be found by clicking on the 'down' triangle located at the far right, inside address box.

Other recent urls can be retrieved by clicking, and pulling down a bit on the 'backwards arrow' located at the far left of address bar panel. If you have several tabs open, this works for retrieving recent urls for all of those tabs you are currently using.

IE bashes peoples' faces in, and throws them in the river.

I like Opera, but always kinda quirky for me with all the serious tweaks I do to Firefox...sure I can use Opera, but then can't do this or that, no web developer toolbar thingy if I'm doin webdev stuff....adblock, cookiesafe, phproxy, etc., although by now perhaps Opera has a bigger user base and has more add-ons to choose from.

dunno, guess they didn't want to blow it...took their time, they'd look pretty foolish haphazardly releasing something that imediate got torn apart with a hacker exploit.

AOL more or less has had me hooked with their email setup and the valuable history of emails that I've accumulated over time. The default access is over IE8 which I'm stuck with. Yes I can get around slowness of IE8 by opening aol in Opera. But then, at least last time I checked, access to email becomes a hassle. But I think things have changed so now maybe its not the hassle it once was. I'll have to try Opera again.

That was their plan, to lock you into their email system and keep you captive.

I saw that danger years ago and refused to use any email setup tied to any ISP. Always used emails like Netscape, Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, etc. This way you keep all your email accounts whenever you change ISPs.

For me, I never picked up on all that. Thanks again for your wisdom.

I'll have to try Opera again.
Chrome is also worth trying out.
Chrome is faster than FF, nice and getting better all the time.

I use all 3 Opera, Chrome and FF on Linux.

Opera, Chrome and FF are free browsers.
Believe all other browsers are free also.
