Would love to start a porn production company as I understand there is monster cash to be made.
Can anyone point me in the proper direction

thanks

Interesting report and a lot of valid points but the porn industry in the US alone is 3 billion dollars. There are people making huge cash and like any new busisness in is bound to fail in the first year if not properly funded and plan, this one is no differnet

I am interested in porn and pussy no matter what I do. The reason for the company would be for cash and that alone if porn is what get 's it for me so much the better. Also not so much interested in the web as I am more interested in producing movies.

A sobering fact: of the 20,000 adult movies made in the US last year, less than 1% actually made money, and they were largely the major studios or bigger gonzo producers whose investment is amortized over different ventures.

Porn is an intensely competitive business now, and easy money is very hard to come by. Newbies are crushed like flies now.

I find that hard to belive and would like to see the source of your information. Porn films are relativly inexpensive to produce, the thing is distribution if you have that than all else falls into place

well just as you start any business you need to look at the things that will make or break you. The porn industry is very saturated since there is lots of money to be made lots of people think like you do and come in and try and cash in. If you are distributing online fims then security will be a major issue for you since if someone gets into your site often your videos will be all over the net and no one will want to pay your membership fee. Don't think that no one will ever get in because that won't happen but you have to have some good damage control measures in place for when people do get into your site. If you are producing these fims as video tapes or as DVD then you will need to look at the production costs of producing these films and on what scale you intend to produce them. You would also need to find people to sell your stuff. Finally you need to have a product that offers something better or different then your competitors don't as well as keep them from just taking your idea and beating you out that way.

For a reality check, I suggest you try talking to a distributer.

The "click" you hear, is them hanging up on you.

If you don't have a finished product, you have no hope in hell of getting their attention, and even then, it is an uphill battle.

*But*, if you have four 18 year old cuties, like Aurora Snow or Gauge, and they will do double anal, ATM and perform with anyone, I would be interested in talking with you. LOL

yes sometimes it is a surprise as to what people will buy eventhough they can get it for free if they look for it

oh and yeah you can always count on 1% of the population to buy whatver it is you have to sell.
Just looked at your site....Are you sure 1% of the Population would get tricked into that rubbish?
Plus, i am sure a 10 year old could gather all the info for Free on the net.
If it generates money, good for you and continue selling....but I would PAY to see what kind of people actually buy into this....

Ah... porn

I knew one fellow who earned US$3000 per month from a couple of porn sites back in 1997-8. The gay porn netted about two-thirds of the income. His sites (one gay, one straight) had nothing but images ripped from newsgroups. He spammed for advertising (losing three ISPs before learning to do it right). Those were the "wild west" days of internet porn.

Nowadays, the likelihood of producing a porn site that actually generates a profit is extremely low. Porn movies offer potentially greater return but like real movies, most productions fail to make a profit. The lack of profit ought to be self evident in the poor production quality of porn. More than half the stuff is made by folks who have no sense of lighting, camera angles or editing. They look like what they are... home movies. Ask yourself: Why would stuff in stores look like that? Well... the profit from one movie is near zero so the cost has to be kept near zero.

Like any industry, however, there is money to be made by anyone who comes up with a new idea. If you think you have a new idea go for it. Note well that if you're motivation is merely to make money and you lack an interest in the film-making, chances are you will fail. Money-makers are generally deeply committed to the industry in which they make money and their money is a by-product of that commitment.

Of course in film making relatively inexpensive still means you need to put up a fair bit of dough. If you produce some cheap crap it will be difficult to find the distribution for you film. The type of film that is going to get you widespread distribution will cost about $50,000-$250,000 to produce. Extremely inexpensive when compared to Hollywood films, but a pretty hefty chunk of change for most people.

I'd be curious to know how the majority of porn is distributed these days.
I'm sure DVD's are cheaper than VHS, but isn't online movie distribution the way of the future?

Are you saying

that you can't buy a high end Cannon camera, a good Mac and a DVD burner and go into business. I would think that the very low end of the market would be ripe for attack.

I wonder why this industry continues to post increasing profit despite piracy. Maybe the music companies should start making porn. lol

The porn industry is notorious for its shady bookkeeping. I would be suspicious of anyone or any source that claims to have data on how much porn companies make. The porn industry is like SCs: its a great way for organized crime to launder money. Also, few companies accurately report their revenues and income b/c it's such a cash business (why pay taxes?).

Seriously, though, in terms of starting your own porn business. I think you've missed the boat by about 4-5 years. My friend wanted me to start an online porn site a few years back but I just wasn't interested. We probably would have made a killing but searching the web for hours just to find new content didn't really appeal to me. Nowadays, the major porn websites buy up all the little guys (mostly for their content) so good luck making any serious cash.

My only advice would be that you'll get out only as much as you put in. In online porn, it's all about how fresh your content is.
