Homemade are the best. Spent many summers in New BRunswick bible belt where baked beans are a Saturday night tradition along with homemade rolls or bread. And then you go to bible class, sunday school and church service for 3 hours in total and try to keep in your farts. And then you get home and have cold beans on bread for lunch.
Try to get larger, oval shaped beans as opposed to the pea shaped ones.
Soak overnight in H2O
Drain, add fresh H2O and boil for an hour
Drain liquid but save it
layer in a bean crock or deep oven proof dish mustard powder, beans, onions, and pork (diced bacon or backfat)
pour enough molasses over them to almost cover them and top up with some of the H2O
Cover and bake at 300 all day....usually all day Saturday. 6 hours should be enough.
Check every hour and add water to keep them covered.
