The doctor said my two big toes' nails are messed up because of fungas. He prescribed a pill but said it is hard on the liver.

Question: Is there a safe home remedy to get rid of fungas?

Why are you trying to get rid of fun gas? You could earn a fortune if you learned how to bottle it.

I saw the title and had 3 options to consider:

1)yours
2)it was a specific type of fungus that inflicts itself on asses
3)spelling mistake...the winner.

A cream you can get prescibed by your doctor is Lamisil.
Before applying wash the area with Nizoral anti-dandruff shampoo. It has a fungas killer in it. But leave it on for about 10 minutes. Then wash it off dry the area and apply the cream.

The doctor prescribed the pill form but warned that it is hard on my liver. I do not want to mess with my liver. I asked him about the cream but he said the pill is stronger.

I read that a mix of white vinegar and warm water solution also works.

Lamisil is the one I used too. Yes the pill is stronger, but the cream is safer. I used it without vinegar or dandruff shampoo and it did the job just fine.
Thanks. I'll ask for the cream prescription. I am concern about the pill because of the "hard on my liver" warning.

BTW: How long (days, weeks, months?) did you have to use the cream before the fungus was gone?

I agree with asking for the cream prescription. Why take something that could be hard on your liver if there are other options.

If you google Lamisil you can get some info on it.

I think the length of time for the fungas to clear is difficult to comment on. I applied the medicationt 2x a day and it was gone in 3 weeks.

The other thing that worried me is the doctor prescribed the pill (hard on liver) for 12 weeks which seems like a really long time to subject my liver to stress. Thanks guys. I think I'll go the cream route as well.

One more question. How does one contract fungus in the toes? Where does fungus come from? The doctor said "fungus happens" and wouldn't speculate how my big toes got infected.

There's also a cream the doctor can prescribe. I think it takes a little longer but it's a lot safer. I had the same problem a few years back and the cream worked for me.
Lamisil. It can be bought over the counter in the US. Not sure why its prescription here. 1%.

You can pick it up standing on places where other people that have foot fungus has been standing, it does not help if you then put your foot into a sweaty stinky shoe or boot. I do not wear shoes two days in a row to let the moisture dry up in the footware, in the winter I use a boot dryer. You can buy one commercially made or make one out of a PVC tube and a computer fan that you can buy at an electronics store. Change your socks every day.
( some people do not )

Can you catch fungus strictly from nature like walking on contaminated sand or swimming in contaminated water or touching fungus plants?

For the curious, I can assure you I did not stick my toe in warm moist places of somebody's body.

Stubbing your toe...cutting your toe nails too short...are some causes I've been told. I think we all have the fungus, it's just dormant until some trauma to our toe occurs. I want to add that ladies can contract the fungus when they have pedicures at the spa and the instruments are properly sterilized between patients. I guess men are exposed to the same risk too if they have pedicures

Other topical remedies include Penlac (like a nail polish application), but @ $165 for nail polish size bottle it's an expensive and cumbersome remedy. Avoid wearing black/dark socks, wear cotton socks (more absorbent), spray inside your footwear with antifungal applications. I'm going to try laser therapy, chiropody I think is the medical term. Another remedy is I've been told you can have the nail removed, but there's no guarantee it will grow back fungus-free.
