I need to find a reputable and decent computer repairman for my comp. I've been told Geek Squad aren't very reliable.

Does anyone concur?

I was at another computer repairshop and the motherboard, fans were working, but then after I picked it up, the motherboard and fans weren't working anymore, because he said the motherboard was dead. So, why were the fans working if the motherboard was dead, prior to my taking it to him.

Anyone suggest a good place, that I can trust?

Since alot of places are bogus.

Thanks.

Sits in a corner all alone
There are two types of repair centres at Best Buy. The first is of course, Geek Squad, from what I am told is a separate entity that operates in a contract to Best Buy (which is why they are at Best Buy Stores, and not Futureshop stores, despite both being under the same banner). The other is Best Buy's very own in-house technicians.

Geek Squad techs supposedly have much higher qualifications then Best Buy in house techs. They are supposed to have certification in brand computer repairs as well as A+. BB in-house do not, which explains why they are only paid at minimum wage compared to GS, at what I was told at $15/hr. I know this because I tried applying to Geek Squad at one point when I was unemployed, that was around the time when Minimum wage was supposed to be increased to $8. However I was told that in order to apply to GS, I needed to be referred to by a GS tech in which I did not know one. And BB was not going to increase compensation for in-house techs despite the minimum wage increase.

Based on this, be sure you're speaking to a GS employee and not a BB inhouse tech. Apparently a lot of people consider them to be the same company when it appears they are separate and distinct entities.

Where is Logic Computers? In Toronto?

How long will it take for them to back up the files on my HD? A week?

And how do you safely transport a hard drive, outside of the computer's case?

Store locations are on their website:

Probably a day or two, depending on when you take it in and how busy they are.

I'd just put in in a plastic bag and treat it carefully. They're not as fragile as you'd think.

You can get power to the fans with an unusable motherboard.

I wouldn't trust any repair shop to do anything but declare something damaged for insurance purposes. GS is known for its poor quality and shotgun style solutions (i.e. replace the motherboard). I'm not aware of any organization that has rave reviews though.

And you do know that a new and decent motherboard/cpu/memory kit can be had under $200, right? Memory prices seem set to rise, so you'd want to jump on that sooner than later.

In a place far, far away
Something to consider:

1) Computers are so cheap these days in most cases it is not worthwhile to repair.
2) Upgrading is also not worth it - components are much more expensive than buying a whole new system - exception is if you are a gamer or a heavy graphics nerd :)
3) If your old components are high-end e.g. video card, HD, DDR2 then why not consider buying a new system and make a swap.

It would be most helpful to list what you have and why you think your old system is DOA.

My two cents

Good luck

Having worked for a similar organisation to Geek Squad, I would definately say......

AVOID AT ALL COSTS

I wont go into too many details, but unwritten standard practise left a lot to be desired, especially relating to privacy of data.

I left very quickly to work in 'Real World' IT, on both sides of the Atlantic - that was 13 years ago.

Oh yeah....the sell up....when in store techs are given sales targets - especially on extended warranties. Whilst not recieving commission for the sales.......
